Default Letters at the Beginning of Surahs - 12-04-2005

Assalamu Alaikum

Everytime I read the Quran, i notice some Surahs, such as surat al baqarah
surah al araf, surah yunis, etc...

they start with letters...such as alif, lam, mim;or alif, lam, mim, saad

what do those letters mean?

at first i thought it was like a way to teach the prophet how to read as it was relevated to him...or to show that you get a reward for each letter that is read or recited in the quran...but im not sure

can someone plz clearify this for me.

jazakum Allah khair
fi aman Allah
w'salaam
