So a good Muslim is a bit like a child who obediently does anything and everything commanded by a controlling parent?

No, not as a child. But the One who created you has the right to tell you what to do. In the end it is our choice to what we will. But our choice, depending on what it is, has consequesnces. Does not the one who Created you know what is best for you and what is harmful? Therefore it makes complete sense to follow what He has sent down, the Guidance, the Quran because all that is in it, is for the benefit of Man and all that it warns against is harmful for man. And what a good end it promises to those who hear and obey! Paradise, gardens under which rivers flow. Is there any other reward for good other than good?
But those that turn away arrogantly, take their religion as play and amusement and die in the state of rejection, then for them is Hell where they will be in for eternity. That is the justice of God. Why should He forgive you and allow you to enter into Paradise when you did not believe in Him? When you were rebellious against him? No, you will be given what you have sent forth.

Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others.
