About as real as any propaganda nonsense. But, it actually does clean toilet bowls.

I am not certain about all paint brushes with all paints but back in my art days I used it to clean my brushs I used for egg tempera painting.

I do not reccommend using it for any of the other purposes I mentioned in my "rumor"
