Default Toilets? - 4 Weeks Ago

I hope this is not too delicate a question.
I am reassured knowing that a mod will read this thread to approve it - so please move this thread to wherever you deem more appropriate ...

I am aware that Muslims consider the toilet to be an unclean place - and for not just hygiene reasons.

Can somebody please explain to me, what the reasons for this are? (And point out reference to Qu'ran and Sunnah)

Thank you.

Bumping this up ...

(I know this is a bit of a delicate question, but I would be very interested to read any replies)

Thank you

Hi Glo,

Toilets are the dwelling places of evil jinns. They like sticking around in unclean places such as toilets and dunghills etc. Since toilets are a place where we deposit dirty smelly bodily waste, they also retain that sense of uncleanliness in the psychological sense. I'm sure no one would like to eat dinner in one no matter how clean it was :P

The Prophet (PBUH) also advised us to seek protection before entering the toilet.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) who says: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the toilet, he would say, 'Allahumma inni a`udhu bika min al-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith (O Allah, I seek Refuge with You from all offensive and wicked things [evil deeds and evil spirits]).'”

I suppose the presence of filthy jinns also contributes to them being unclean places. That's all I can think of Glo. I hope that helped

Thank you, Muslimah Sis.

I remember a revert once asking whether it would be okay to lock herself for prayer into the disabled toilet cubicle - and that suggestion was met with a very strong negative response from Muslims, who seemed pretty disgusted at the very thought.

Urgh, corse!

You have to pray somewhere clean,

Cleanliness is a major part of faith y'know,

"Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean." (2: 22)

"Believers! When you prepare for prayer wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; rub your heads (with water) and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are ritually impure bathe your whole body." (5: 6)

The two places where prayer (the 5 prayers) are forbidden is in the graveyard and the toilets area.

The ruling is something agreed upon.

The toilets are unhygienic, aswell as sister Muslimah stated. And the graves are places where the people have died, and Islam is against any form of worship of the dead (i.e. saints etc.) - so praying in graveyards is also forbidden.

And Allah knows best.

Peace.

Yup rightly so. It doesn't make sense to perform ablution to purify one's body then pray in an unclean place. Did you want to know anything else Glo?

No, not on this particular subject. I think I know all I need to know now.

Thanks to all who commented.

Go and look in a Mosque toilet and you will think its an unclean place too!

Seriously, this is because a toilet is full of Najis things, like urine, blood and various other human by-products which don't bear mentioning. Najis things are not very good, as they break wudhu and soil clothes.

Also, there is the Jinn/devil/shaytaan issue which another person brought up too. Add these things together and you get a very nasty place.

Get rid of one of them,

The Prophet (Peace Be upon him) also advised us to seek protection before entering the toilet.

You don't want random freakazoids lookin' at ya butt while your doin' ya business, get me.
