Do Muslims do charity work, philanthropy, nonprofit work for the poor? Are their Islamic based humanitarian Third World projects?

We are obligated to give charity to those less fortunate. It is zakat and is one of our pillars of faith.

Does anybody have any contact info about Islamic Charity organizations that help the poor in Third World countries? I'd specifically like to know if any are working in Haiti.

I don't know of any that work in Haiti specifically, although the most trustworthy Islamic Charity in the US, IMHO is Islamic Relief. They're there when there are major natural disasters, like Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean Tsunami, as well as doing ongoing programs to distribute zakat and development.

Muslim with a certain worth of property/money have to pay compulsory charity called ZAKaat once in a year.

Simply speaking, it's 2.5% of assets OR 10% of produce/increment.
