Qur'anic Exegesis?!

Whats Qur'anic Exegesis?? and what would studying it entail?? I know that Exegesis is a greek word meaning critical research or something, but do you think the actual study of it would entail learning and understanding the arabic at deeper levels, or the study of the actual tafseer?

Qur'aanic Exegesis is the explanation and interpretation of the Qur'aan.

Studying the science of Tafseer, just like any other science, needs to be done under the supervision of a qualified scholar.

You would learn about the principles; Tafseer of Qur'aan by the Qur'aan itself; by the Sunnah; by the statements of the Sahabah; by the statements of the Taabi'oon; by the legal and lexical meanings of words...

You would most definately need to have a good grasp of the Arabic language since it is probably the most pivotal tool in understanding the Qur'aan.

You would study the Muhkam (clear) & Mutashaabih (unclear) ayaat; Naskh (abrogation); Mutlaq (unconditional) and Muqayyad (conditional) ayaat; 'Aam (general) and Khaas (specific) ayaat; Mantuq (explicit) and Mafhum (implicit) ayaat etc. Also, Asbaab al-Nuzool (the causes/reasons for revelation)...

InshaAllaah someone correct me if I've said anything wrong...

A really good book I'd recommend is Usool at-Tafseer by Bilal Phillips.

A brother wrote this up a while ago, it should asnwer your question Insha'Allaah:

The classical Sunni scholar Imam As-Suyuti cites in his monumental book on the sciences of the Qur’an al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Qur’an fifteen or so characteristics of the Mufassir. Scholars affirm that any tafsir (commentary), which disregards these principles, must be scrutinized with great concern and caution, if not completely rejected. Below are some important conditions:

1- Proper intention and sound creed.
2- Knowledge of the Arabic Language; this requires one to master Grammar [nahu], Morphology [sarf], word etymology [ishtiqaq], Arabic rhetoric [balagha], Poetry amongst other things.
3- Knowledge of the various modes of Qira’ats [recitations].
4- Knowledge of the Principles of Fiqh [Usul al-Fiqh] and Fiqh.
5- Knowledge of the Asbab an Nuzul [reasons for revelation] and its related topics.
6- Knowledge of the Nasikh and Mansukh.
7- Knowledge of Hadith especially those pertaining the explicit commentary made by the Prophet (pbuh).
8- Knowledge of the makki, madani, muhkam, mutashabih and the various types of ‘Ijaz of the Qur’an.
9- Referring to the reports of the Companions of the Prophet.
10- Considering the reports of the successors of the Companions.
11- Consulting the opinions of eminent scholars.
12- Following the proper methodology of exegesis of the Qur’an.

you should listen to some of the Tafseer by Mufti Ismail Menk. here's a bit of his bio:

Mufti Ismail Menk of Zimbabwe commenced hifz at the tender age of nine years and completed at the age of twelve. He studied Arabic, Urdu and the Hanafi Mazhab from a young age with his father Maulana Musa Menk who graduated in Mazahirul Uloom Shahjahanpur under Hazrat Shaikh Maulana Zakaria (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) in the late 1950’s. Having studied the Hanafi Mazhab he then went on to study at the Islamic University of Madinah where he completed a degree in Shariah on the four Mazhabs. Thereafter he joined the Iftah (Mufti) department of Darul Uloom Kantaria in Gujarat, India where he graduated under Mufti Ismail Barkodrah at the end of 1999.

Ever since he has been actively engaged in teaching, lecturing country wide, running of Islamic educational institutes for the under privileged as well as the orphans, construction of Masajid and Madaris, relief work and coordinated dawaah country wide.

Currently he is the Imaam of the largest Musjid in Harare.
