Default Ahl-e-Kitaab Question - 02-08-2008

i am confused about the ahl-e-kitaab. i know it is a legal construct.
what i don't understand is most christians worship more than one god so are they not mushirkeen?
some muslims even call jews mushirkeen.
my question is, how are christians and jews different from other mushirkeen and why do they have a special status?
thanks.
