Make Good Use Of Ramadaan

Shaykh Usaamah Al-Khayyaat
Ramadaan10, 1423 (November 15,2002)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! A great and blessed month has come to you. It is a month in which gates of Paradise are opened and gates of Hell are closed. It is also a month in which Allaah wants to see your competition to do good deeds. So show Allaah the good that is in you. The fortunate is the one whom Allaah touches with His Mercy and therefore wins forgiveness and pleasure of Allaah and the wretched is the one whom Allaah deprives of mercy and forgiveness in this month.

Brethren in faith! Amid others' negligence, the truthful believer seizes this lifetime opportunity which Allaah has provided for His slaves. A part of this opportunity is fasting during the month of Ramadaan. The truthful and sincere Muslim makes good use of this opportunity to attain his noble goals and better his worldly life and that of the Hereafter. Benefits of fasting are uncountable though the prominent among them is that it straightens the tongues and purifies them of abhorred utterances so that they can have the full qualities of a complete and perfect believer whom the Messenger of Allaah described thus, "The true believer does not smite nor does he curse or say immoral or obscene things." (Ahmad)

Brethren in faith! This prominent quality and impact should be given utmost attention, for it is the concern of wise men and people of understanding. Evils of utterances should be seriously feared, for they cause calamity and afflictions and bring about diseases that defy all remedies and cause hatred. Enough for you an explanation on this is the saying of the Messenger of Allaah to Mu'aadh bin Jabal, when he asked him astonishingly, "Are we going to be held responsible for what we utter?!" The Messenger of Allaah retorted, "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'aadh! Are people cast in Hell on their faces – or their necks – for reasons other than what their tongues have wrought?" (Ahmad and At-Tirmidhee)

It is therefore incumbent on the fasting Muslim who seeks the pleasure of his Lord and hopes to achieve the promise of Allaah made on His behalf by His Messenger that, "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadaan with faith and hoping to get reward from Allaah, his past sins will be forgiven to him." To remember that insulting a Muslim is a sinful act as said by the Prophet. He should always remember that insulting a Muslim is an act of disobedience to Allaah and exceeding His limits, by which man does wrong to himself by decreasing his own eemaan through smiting, cursing and saying obscene things against others. Likewise, it is unlawful for him to do that because it is tantamount to disrespecting the rights of brotherhood which are blessed by Allaah and by which He describes the true believers in His Book when He says,

"Verily, the believers are brethren."

Allaah also strongly condemns whoever attempts to disregard this brotherhood or disrupt it.

The Muslim must also know that staining his tongue with these evil utterances while he is fasting is the greatest vicious and forbidden act that is why the Prophet said, "Fasting is a shield (against all evils). So on the day of your fasting, do not say obscene things and do not raise up your voice in argument. And if anyone insults or fights you tell him: I am fasting, I am fasting." (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) A Muslim must say this in order to nip the evil in the bud and remind his brother so that Allaah may have mercy on him and let him refrain from his evil utterances or aggression.

Brethren in faith! This Prophetic explanation teaches us how not to reward an evil with another and how to prevent the tongue from falling into the abyss of ignorance, insult and fighting that could lead to hostilities and mutual hatred. It is also an opportunity for a Muslim to make use of this self-restraint and self-purification throughout the days and nights of this great month and also encourage his brethren to take to it, so that each and everyone can achieve the goal of piety which is the aim of ordaining fasting. Allaah says,

"O you who believe! Fasting is ordained on you as it was ordained on those who were before you that you may be pious. (It is) for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) for other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. old man), they have (a choice to fast or) to feed a poor person (for each day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast is better for you if only you know."

(Al-Baqarah 2:183-184)

Brethren in Islaam! Observing the fast of this blessed month as commanded by Allaah and explained by the Messenger creates a far-reaching message on the hearts. It is therefore incumbent on this Ummah to clearly convey this message to mankind with total submission to Allaah and absolute surrender to all him commandments and to give that preference above all loved things. This message must also be used to purify our souls and elevate them to all perfections and to strengthen, the cords of brotherhood and mutual compassion and love among Muslims.

Fear Allaah dear brethren, and make use of all avenues to preserve this message so that it can reach all nooks and crevices of the world by its effective impact. "Allaah guides with it whoever He wishes among His slaves and He is All-Wise, All-Knowledgeable."
