Beard is it fard or sunnah????

i was having an argument with this brother about beard being waajib and i give him the following hadith.

Hadith of Ibn 'Umar (ra) who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Be different from the mushrikeen: let your beards grow and trim your moustaches."
i also gave him the link to this book which clearly states its wajib

so i told him its waajib in all the four madhabs.

His argument was that the Prophet(PBUH) never said we must grow our beards and if growing a beard was fard it should have been mentioned in the quran. also he is like theres a difference of opinion in growing a beard and sent me a link from wikipedia

which said that the Shafii madhab includes two valid opinions, one stating that a beard is required and one stating that a beard is Sunnah Mu'akadah . he also sent me the following link to back up his argument http://www.pakistanlink.com/Opinion/...g04/13/04.html.
Can somebody plz clarify this for me whether growing a beard is fard or sunnah? i still think its wajib and wont stop debating till i convince him a 100percent that growing a beard is fard.
