I find this hadith pretty scary :/ :

Abu Dawud has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘When I was taken up to heaven (i.e. during the Mi`raj) I passed by people who had nails of copper with which they were scratching their faces and their breasts. I said, ‘Who are these [people], O Gabriel?’ He replied: ‘They are those who consumed the flesh of people [i.e. backbite them] and aspersed their honor.’

wat 2 do if the elders are the ones backbiting others, nd when u say something u get awholata omg subhanaAllah wat a shameless child. How dare u tell the ones who are elder to not speak?

I am now use to sit there n listen to it. I once gathered enuff strength and said "enjoy eatiing the meat of ur brother" and I almost had something thrown at me!

Leave the room with a frown or something if saying something will get you killed/have a sandal thrown at your face/maybe some gua (bettel nuts) too.

Or you could try to change the subject, or try to show your disapproval in a respectable manner like something like the above, you should never say what you said to your elders like that, it seems to lack respect. Allahu A'lam.

I did try all the above. but how long can I change the subject? Sometimes they backbite people I knw.

I'm not usually disrespectful. I did mention that its not nice to backbite n when I got attacked I said "well then enjoy eating the meat of ur brothers". I wanted to remind them of the hadeeth. I said this to women who visit our home (not directly at my family). Still wrong I know, but that was my way of reminding them.

Hmm, I know what you mean ukhti. Sorry if I sounded harsh, wasn't my intention :o. But you know if you're not gentle in your approach, you may cause more harm then good because they'd think your "extreme" maybe or some crap :O :').
