The BBC has commissioned Oxford Scientific Films to produce Science And Islam, a three-part documentary set to air on UK digital channel BBC4 in 2009.

The series will explore the contribution of early Islam to the development of scientific knowledge. Produced by Tim Usborne and exec producer Paul Sen, the series reunites the team behind BBC4's Atom series.

Series presenter Professor Jim Al-Khalili will trace the lives and achievements of the great scientists of the medieval Islamic world.

Oxford Scientific Films is a division of Southern Star Entertainment UK, and the series will be distributed internationally by sister company Southern Star International, launching at Mipcom in October.

The series was originally commissioned by Martin Davidson, BBC4s commissioning editor for specialist factual in-house; exec producer is Mark Bell, commissioning editor for specialist factual independents.

Bell said: "A thousand years ago Islam led the world in science. The story of how this was so, and what happened next, is by turns revelatory and poignant. I am thrilled that Jim Al-Khalili is our guide to this remarkable and often overlooked slice of science history."

Oh dis is awesome! never really knew there was a bbc4 tho...dang, is there really a bbc2, and 3?! oh my god. that means 4times the horrible accent! (or do i not get it?)

Looking forward to it, I probably will have to find a bootleg version on the net as there's no BBC4 over here. Which really sucks by the way, there's a lot of good European tv I can't watch (assuming I had the time).

im no skeptical about channel 4 though. Especially after the Quran doc which they portrayed as pro islaam only to try to show that its been altered and corrupted with time.

channel 4 gets the stamp of distrust in my opinion...

I don't think that's what they were trying to do akhee. As far as I'm aware, they didn't mention anything about the Qur'an being altered. My only beef with tht documentary is that the showed too much of the 'extreme' interpretations without giving the proper Muslims a chance to explain the truth behind it.

Channel 4 confuses me more than anything. I don't know whether they like Islam or not.
