I was also wondering why musical instruments are banned or discouraged but music without the use of musical instruments like nasheeds are allowed or encouraged. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

"Bells are the flutes of Satan." (Muslim)

"Songs make hypocrisy grow in the heart just as water makes crops grow." (Bayhaqi, Shuab Al Iman)

Duff is Halaal, tambourines are not, because they have bells.
