Lightbulb The Believer is a Mirror for His Brother - 06-10-2007

The Believer is a Mirror for His Brother

From Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu 'anhu) who said that Allaah's Messenger () said:

The believer is a mirror for the believer, and the believer is the brother of the believer. He safeguards his property for him and defends him from behind.
*

So the description of his being a 'mirror' is very precise and profound showing the culmination of brotherhood and solidarity. So your brother, O servant of Allaah, is an image of you yourself. Say if he behaves badly it is as if you are the one who has behaved badly, and if he makes a mistake, it is as if you have made a mistake. So he is a mirror for you and then an image of you yourself! So do not treat him except with mildness and gentleness.

* Reported by al-Bukharee in al-Adabul Mufrad (no. 239), Aboo Dawood (Eng. Trans. 3/1370/no.4900) and others. Its chain of narration is hasan.

Lightbulb The Believer is a Mirror for His Brother - 06-10-2007

..The Prophet said:
"A Muslim is a mirror to another Muslim"
(Abu Dawud)

Such a short Hadith, but like many of the Prophet's words - Deep in meaning...

"What he meant was that we have an obligation to point to fellow Muslim his shortcoming and to tell the truth about his good aspects. He did not say, "A Muslim is a sword (in correcting the mistakes) of another Muslim.

A mirror has the following qualities, that we also should have when reflecting upon other fellow Muslims.

1. A mirror has a one-to-one relationship with an object, after the person has gone the Mirror doesn't keep the image for everyone to see, its as though the person was never there.

2. It does not announce a defect in public; a mirror does not backbite.

3. A mirror does not distort the image, but gives an honest, unbiased picture, if there is something wrong - it shows it in due proportion, if there is something right - it also shows it in due proportion, it is very Fair.

4. Neither does it exaggerate nor does it belittle the object.

5. The object goes to the mirror. The mirror does not travel looking for the short-comings of the object."
