ijtihad refers to when one uses their own reasoning to arrive at an Islamic ruling. In Islam, the sources for Islamic rulings are derived in this order:

-First we consult the Qur'an
-If the ruling is not specified in the Qur'an, we seek clarification in the Sunnah (way) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him)
