when to shorten prayers?

Salaama Alaikum brothers and sisters

Hi guys...I have been very confused about the shortening of prayers like when we are allowed to shorten it and when we are not. U know sometimes when I am at work or any other place that I can't pray either I can't find a place to pray or I don't get the time or any other reason...my point is, in any of these cases are we allowed to "jam'c", combine the prayers either before or after this situation?
I am looking forward for your answers....
