Hmm...I've always wondered about trees, why dont they lose their leaves in the summer? that way they'd be cool in the heat, rather than losing them in the winter when they could actually do with the warmth! pffft! silly trees! *grin*

It's not about warmth. It's about light. They use their leaves for photosynthesis. The summer is the best time, because that's when there's the most light. When autumn comes around, the leaves have done all their photosynthesising for the year, so they shrivel up and die. Winter comes, the tree's all cosy and chillin'. It doesn't grow new leaves yet, since there's not enough sunlight to photosynthesise. So when spring happens, new leaves grow and the cycle starts afresh.

If any of that science is crappy or false, the mistakes are mine, not my secondary school biology teacher's.
