ETIQUETTE WITH RECITING THE QURAN

Since the Quran is the word of Allah, we should believe that whoever acts in accordance with the Quran is acting in according with the truth.
The Muslim’s faith in the greatness of the message of the Quran is increased by what has been stated by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who said:

‘The best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches others.’

He (peace be upon him) also said, ‘Read the Quran, for it shall come as an intercessor for its companion on the Day of Resurrection.’
It is important, therefore, that we allow what it allows and forbids what it forbids.

When we recite the Quran, we should adhere to the following manners.
Here are some tips that will improve our relationship with the Quran, Insha’allah.

We should recite the Quran in the best of conditions, that is, in a state of purity, facing the direction of the Kabah and by sitting in a honourable manner.

We should also recite the Quran slowly because the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: 'Whoever recites the Quran in less than three nights, did not understand it.' Also by reciting slowly we can ponder over the meaning of the verses we are reading.

The Prophet also said:‘Recite the Quran and cry. If you cannot cry, then try to make yourself cry.’ We should therefore read the Quran with the fear of Allah and humility as well as demonstrating sorrow.

The Prophet (pbuh) also said: ‘Beautify the Quran by your voices.’ In other words, read it in your best voice and with a nice melody.

Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah said, ‘He is not one of us who does not make his voice beautiful with the Quran.’
We should also try to recite the Quran in private if we fear that we would be reciting for show or if we would be disturbing people praying.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)said, ‘The one who recites the Quran aloud is like the one who publicly gives charity.’

It is known that giving charity secretly is preferred unless there is some benefit in doing it publicly, such as encouraging others. The same is also true for the Quran. If we feel that by reciting the Quran loudly, we will be able to encourage others, then there’s no problem with reciting loudly. However, if we feel that by reciting loudly that we are doing this to show off, it is better to recite quietly.

We should also not recite the Quran whilst being heedless of what it says.
For example, if a person recites the verse, ‘’Curse of Allah upon those who lie’(3:61), and he or she is a liar, they are but cursing themselves.
