What kind of day is it today?

Al Khaleel ibn Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said:


أَيََّامِي أَرْبَعَةٌ

I have four kinds of days:



يَوْمٌ أَخْرُجُ فَأَلْقَى فِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ مَنِّي

A day when I go out and meet someone more knowledgeable than me,



فَأَتَعَلَّمُ مَنْهُ فَذَاكَ يَوْمُ فَائِدَتِي وَ غَنِيمَتِي

so I learn from him, and that is the day of my benefit and profit;




وَ يَوْمٌ أَخْرُجُ فَأَلْقَى فِيهِ مَنْ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ مِنْهُ

And a day when I go out and meet someone less knowledgeable than me,




فَأُعَلِّمَهُ فَذَاكَ يَوْمُ أَجْرِي

so I teach him, and that is my day of reward;



وَ يَوْمٌ أَخْرُجُ فَأَلْقَى فِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ مِثْلِي

And a day when I go out and meet someone like myself,



فَأَُذَاكِرُهُ فَذَاكَ يَوْمُ دَرْسِي

so I study and review with him, and that is the day of my lesson;



وَ يَوْمٌ أَخْرُجُ فَأَلْقَى فِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ دُونِي وَ هُوَ يَرَى أَنَّهُ فَوْقِي

And a day when I go out and meet someone below my level, but he feels that he is above my level,


فَلاَ أكلمه، وَ أَجْعَلْنَا يَوْمَ رَاحَتِي

so I do not talk to him, and I make that my day to relax.
