Cheney Will Shoot Americans To Start Iran War

Aug. 4, 2008 (LPAC)--One of the scenarios that Dick Cheney put on the table in order to have an excuse to start a war with Iran, was to dress Navy Seals up as Iranians, send them off in fake Iranian boats, and have Americans shoot at them, to create a provocation for war. This was reported by New Yorker magazine columnist Seymour Hersh in a conversation at a Think Progress conference in July.

Referring to a meeting in Cheney's office, after an ``overblown incident,'' where a U.S. carrier encountered a few small Iranian speedboats, Hersh told a questioner at the conference about the idea, which was ultimately rejected: ``There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war. The one that interested me the most was, `why don't we build--we in our shipyards--build four or five boats that look like Iranian PT boats. Put Navy Seals on them with a lot of arms. And next time one of our boats goes to the Straits of Hormuz, start a shoot-up.' Might cost some lives. And it was rejected because you can't have Americans killing Americans. That's the...level of stuff we're talking about. Provocation.''

However, the New Yorker suppressed the coverage of the Cheney proposal in Hersh's article, because the proposal was rejected. ``My attitude towards editors is they're mice training to be rats,'' Hersh commented.
