Default Mosque tour set to open minds - 07-04-2006

MEMBERS of a Thomastown Mosque are hoping to dispel any prejudices about the Muslim faith with a free open day at their place of worship next week.

The open day, a joint initiative between the Australian Intercultural Society (AIS) and the Deer Park Mosque committee, invites the public on a guided tour of the mosque enlightening them of its history and purpose.

AIS director Veysel Gencoglu said there was a real need for the public to understand the beliefs of the Islam faith.

“The best way to eliminate misconceptions is to have people walk through the Mosque and actually see what happens inside,” he said.

The AIS, formed in 2000, aims to promote interfaith dialogue by holding events such as church and synagogue visits, art festivals and conferences.

Mr Gencoglu said the mosque open days had been supported by Christian and Jewish communities as well as Muslims.

“They have definitely been successful in breaking down religious barriers,” he said.

Mr Gencoglu said the most common misconception of the Islam faith surrounded terrorist attacks.

“No religion, including Islam, promotes or encourages any type of terrorist acts,” he said.

A question and answer forum will be held after the tour, with traditional Turkish finger food served.

Thomastown Mosque open day will be held on Sunday 9 July from 1pm to 3pm at 130 Station St, Thomastown.
