Default Biggest Srebrenica mass grave found - 08-19-2006

Forensic experts found the biggest mass grave from the Bosnia war containing the remains of more than 1,000 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which about 8,106 Muslim men and boys were murdered by Bosnian Serb troops, the BBC reported.

"We have uncovered 1,153 skeletons, of which 144 were complete while 1,009 were dismembered," a member of the Bosnian forensic team, Murat Hurtic, told AFP news agency.

The remains were uncovered from the grave located in Kamenica, a village in eastern Bosnia near the border with Serbia.

“Kamenica is the biggest mass grave" found since Bosnia's 1992-1995 war, said Hurtic, adding that it contained twice as many victims as the nearby Crni Vrh burial site.

"We found many gunshot wounds, many broken bones and skulls, of whom some could have been broken by machines when the bodies were moved from primary mass graves," he added.

Hurtic also said that they found “the clothing of at least two women, and numerous (remains of) elderly men and several bodies (of victims) aged around 15.”

The Kamenica mass grave also contained documents indicating that the victims died in the Srebrenica massacre, the Associated Press news agency reported.

In July 1995, Serb forces overran the UN-protected enclave of Srebrenica, where tens of thousands of Bosnian Muslim civilians had taken refuge from earlier Serb atrocities.

The Serb forces later separated thousands of men and boys from their families and killed them, dumping the bodies in mass graves.

More mass graves

The Kamenica mass grave is one of eight burial sites found in Kamenica, where Bosnian Serbs brought bodies of the Srebrenica victims to cover up the crime.

AlJazeera
The seven previously exhumed mass graves contained at least 1,000 bodies from the Srebrenica massacre.

Hurtic described the latest mass grave as a pit filled with Srebrenica massacre victims' bodies.

"For 10 years, this mass grave was not covered. The grass grew over the bones because the perpetrators filled the pit with bodies so much that they could not cover it with earth," he said.

Hurtic also said he believed the area around Kamenica village still contains more mass graves.

"Excavations in Kamenica are not over. We will have to return there in a year or two as we have knowledge that in Kamenica there are more mass graves."

The Srebrenica massacre, considered the worst mass killing in Europe since World War Two, had led to genocide charges brought by The Hague War Crime Tribunal against several suspects including wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and his army chief Ratko Mladic.

More than 11 years since the massacre, the two men still remain at large.

The killing would still be going on if it weren't for the U.S. And there isn't even any oil there ! But somehow, someone on this site will put an anti-U.S. spin on that rescue mission. Just wait and see.

I'll keep neutral on this one, but historically, empires tend to be self-serving, adn that includes the Ottomans.

How did saving innocent Muslims in Bosnia help the US in anyway? Maybe the US is not that bad after all.

Yeah, funny isn’t it? Of course, someone will just claim that the USA was there for some reason other than to stop the massacre. The hypocrites on this site are not in short supply.

It's bad because they didnt save innocents in Lebanon where it matterred.

They allowed the Jews to commit the same crimes as their oppressors.

Are you saying that the Muslims in Bosnia do not matter? Odd, what makes the Muslims in Lebanon matter more than the Muslims in Bosnia? Is it the fact that they are fighting Israel, while in Bosnia they are fighting some Serbs in a region most Muslims could not locate on a map?

My opinion is that no human being matters more than another.

You are really funny, Lavikor, I knew you were a pretty serious poster, but that was deliciously hilarious, if I may say.

How many civillians were massacred in the Kosovo Crisis? Several thousand I'd say.

Where was America when 500,000 Ugandans, 700,000 Rwandans, and around 300,000 Burundians died in a small region the size of Yugoslavia, in that same era?

Where was America? Certainly the African crisis was of mammoth proportion compared to the sprinkled massacres in Kosovo, WHERE was America??

Serving its fine self. America was suppressing the National Socialist movement in the region, simply.

Why is it always 'What is America going to do about this' ? Ask France, Russia, China, Iran, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Hezbollah to take care of it. What are THEY doing ? Everyone hates the' Great Satan' until something goes wrong. And then they have their hand out, wanting something for nothing. This tune is getting very old. I only hope the U.S. wises up and tells most of these ingrates to 'go pound sand'.

People like this will hate you no matter what you do. If an American Soldier had saved his mother's life, he would complain that they didnt do it 5 minutes earlier. Cant win situation.

I'm not saying American soldiers or the USArmy are bad guys, heck, I'm thinking about joining the marine corps.

I'm just saying that they're NEUTRAL, not the good guys in any situation.

Every campaign the USArmy has ever embarked on was of self-interest and to protect itself from what it fealt was a threat.

Do I need to congratulate you for saving your life from a mugger? NO! You saved your own butt, not mine, its not even an act of heroism, its simply looking after your own back; it doesn't make anyone a bad guy either.

What country on Earth has not acted out of self-interest? The double standard held against the USA is rediculous. That being said, one cant claim that there was too much to gain to intervene in Somalia, the Balkans and many other places.

I dont understand the last part of your message. ??
