Default Treatment of prisoners: US vs. Iran - 04-11-2007

Let's look at a couple of recent incidents and use them for comparison.

-Iran illegally kidnaps 15 British sailors (-15)
-put them in solitary confinement (-10)
-interrogate them (non violently, but aggressively) (-5)
-force them to say things on TV (-10)
-forgive them and send them home in suits and with gifts (+10)

Total: (-30)

-US illegally kidnaps an Iranian man (-1)
-they interrogate him (violently) (-10)
-they torture him (-20)
-they send him home in scars (-10)

Total: (-31)

I'd say despite them both being illegal, Iran outperforms the US in etiquette and humanisn.

You forgot the distributive property. There are 15 Britons os you have to multiply by 15. The net is -300 then.

BTW..you are being WAAAY to generous with points for those suits the Iranians gave them. The lapels looked like they had carboard in them. Able Rate Tunney will also get a lot os use out of her headscarf too.

I don't like comparison since it gives the impression that if one person's wrong is lesser than the other person's wrong then it is acceptable. Wrong is wrong.

Both US and Iran need to improve their records on humanitarian issues.

Completely agree with you Chuck! I was just ribbing young Skywalker. The truth be told, the US is, hands down, the main abuser of human rights on the planet. Everyone knows that.

I wonder what a mock execution rates on your list? Or the police beating a canadian journalist to death rates on your list? Or being put in jail for speaking against your government? Or any of the other social, political or military injustices that Iran is so well known for, at least the US strictly violates prisoner rights, supposedly.. (I dont even believe most of the stories anyways since usually it is just someone claiming something without proof)

Is it so hard to accept that we're all flaming disgraces? American, Iranian, Muslim, non-Muslim, black, white, purple flavour...

The minute we accept that there's stuff we can do to improve ourselves and the communities we belong to is the first step to preventing future abuse like this.

Americans can come out of their cocoons and say 'hey, bad stuff happens to people in Guantanomo Bay, and just because we think they're terrorists doesn't justify the way certain soldiers treat them'

Muslims can come out of their cocoons and say 'hey, certain Muslims think we're being oppressed, and even though we see where they're coming from, killing scores of civilians is unjustified and has no basis in Islam'

Iranians can come out of their cocoons and say, 'hey, ignore Ahmadinejad, yeah? We don't even know what he's talking about half the time'

If we have this mentality of 'yeah, well at least the US doesn't do this activity that Country X does' and do nothing to improve the situation, we will always have conflict.

Hey, bad stuff happened to people in Abu Ghraib, and just because we think they're terrorists doesn't justify the way certain soldiers treat them.

Prove they "illegally" captured them before you award those points. Prove all those allegations even.

You're right akhi. There is no agreed upon maritime border between Iraq and Iran, so how can they say they were in Iraqi or Iranian waters? The British simply drew up a border for the press.

Surely that must work both ways? If there was no agreed maritime border how could the Iranians either counter British claims by saying the sailors were 500m the wrong side of it or indeed justify their actions at all?

If there wasn't an agreed border before there is now.

If you're gonna give a whole 10 points for the gift bags and suits then at least allocate 5 points for the orange jumpsuits. Just sayin' ;)
