Re: i dont feel close to God

You seem not to have islamic religious experiences??
    Are you a revert?
    Started practicing recently?

It is not easy to give answers. A lot of info is needed.
For example:where you live, how old are you, did you get and how much formal and non formal religious education and other education, which madhab and creed do you follow, do you have a jamah, a shaykh, are you married, healthy, do you have siblings, what profession do you practice, are the earnings and colleagues OK, do you practice fitness, read books in the library, volounteer in the community, does your family practice, how much, do they practice nawafil salawat, dhikr, how much, do they seek regular estegfar, do they pray duas before and after eating, before and after leaving home, do they have a wirid, recite maybe at least 32.,36., 56., 67. surah each night and Manzil, do they and you recite evening and mornings duas, duas and dhikr before sleep, do you pray nawafil salawat like duha, awwabeen, tahajjud, tasbeeh, do you give zakkah (a must!) and sadaqah, since when did you left maybe great sins, do you know Arabic, how much hifz do you know, hiw much time daily do you have, are you sad, tired, did you get medical checks recently, do you know the adab of dua, how much salawat estegfar and tasbeeh do you recite daily, what are your major life problems recently, are you overweight, can you fast every second day, do you eat oily fish, tayyib meat fruits and veggies, what are your hobbies, do you have friends, do they practice and help you becomming better.....??

So much to ask. Without in depth at least anonymus history we can not give quality answers.

We should not answer and ask troll/silly/trash talks.

This reminds me on Surah Ad-Duha circumstances. You know the seerah and reasons for its revelation?

It happens to everyone. Don't worry. I only hope you're not going to be facing hardships after this phase.

Don't rush your salat for anything, as you are standing in front of The One who is in charge of whatever you are rushing for!

    Asalaamu Alaikum,

My sister firstly for us to have concern over our level of imaan and connection to Allah is a sign of imaan itself. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Faith wears out in the heart of any one of you just as clothes wear out, so ask Allah to renew the faith in your hearts” (Mustadrak al-Haakim).

Our Iman is not always as sound and as strong as we want it to be, as it often fluctuates according to life circumstances and situations. Sometimes our hearts will be illuminating full of imaan like in Ramadan and other times our hearts will be devoid of much imaan. It certainly is difficult and even unrealistic for many of us to be able to maintain the same level of worship and imaan as we had in Ramadan. However we can certainly help ourselves in many ways to be able to increase and maintain our imaan throughout the year.

The first thing we have to look at is our obligatory prayers. This is the most important thing after having imaan. Are we praying our prayers on time to the best of our ability? For men are we praying at the Masjid? Are we able to concentrate (Khushu') in our Salaah? See the following thread for help and advices to help with concentration in Salaah:

3 ways of attaining focus in our Salaah (prayer) - You will be amazed!

After Salaah then we must also ensure that we have fulfilled our Zakaat and paid off our debts. Fulfilling our obligations unto Allah are our minimum requirements as believers, so we cannot expect for our imaan and connection to Allah to be maintained without fulfilling our minimum requirements as believers. After that the biggest thing that is draining our imaan and preventing our connection to Allah are the major sins. We are shackled by our major sins just like a person is shackled to chains. It is the major sins that are preventing us from getting closer to Allah and feeling a connection with him. Therefore we must leave the major sins. We must make a firm resolve that we will leave all of our major sins for Allah:

Abu Qatadah (Ra) reported: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), said, “Verily, you will never leave anything for the sake of Allah Almighty but that Allah will replace it with something better for you.” (Musnad Aḥmad 23074)

Everyone of us knows what major sins we are committing, whether it is to do with our lower desires, the sins of our tongues, the way we treat others or other things. So we must know that if we do not leave the major sins then we are preventing ourselves from getting closer to Allah and maintaining our level of imaan. Also we risk our good deeds being erased on the day of judgement:

Thawbaan (Ra) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “I certainly know people of my ummah who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihaamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust.” Thawbaan said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly. He said: “They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the sacred limits of Allah.” (Ibn Maajah: 4245).

Thawbaan (Ra) also said: “The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: ‘A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits.’” (Ibn Maajah: 4022).

One of the Salaf (righteous predecessors) said: “If I disobey Allah, I see that in the attitude of my riding beast and my wife.” ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Abbaas (Ra) said: “Good deeds make the face light, give light to the heart, and bring about ample provision, physical strength and love in people’s hearts. Bad deeds make the face dark, give darkness to the heart, and bring about physical weakness, a lack of provision and hatred in people’s hearts.”

We must be especially careful of the sins of our tongues like profane language, backbiting, slander, gossiping about others: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (Ra) reported: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), said, “Most of the sins of the children of Adam are on their tongues.” Ibn Mas’ud (Ra) said, “O tongue! Speak goodness and be rewarded, or remain silent and be safe, lest you become regretful.” (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 10300)

Also we must never treat our parents badly if they are alive. Allah says: "The Lord has decreed that you worship none save Him alone, and behave beneficently towards parents. If either or both of them should attain old age while you are alive, say not `ugh’ to them, nor chide them, and speak kindly to them. Lower to them the wing of humility out of tenderness and pray: Lord have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was little." (17:25)

“And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination” (Luqmaan 31:14)

And he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The pleasure of Allah is in pleasing one’s father and the anger of Allah is in angering one’s father.” (l-Tirmidhi)

Disobeying our parents is one of the major sins. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Shall I not tell you of the greatest of major sins?” – three times – and we said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Associating others in worship with Allah, and disobeying one’s parents,” – and he was reclining, but he sat up and said, “And false speech and false witness.” (Al-Bukhaari, 2654; Muslim, 126).

We must also treat our near of kin, neighbours and people in general well. The best thing we can do is to resolve any issues we may have with our parents, near of kin, neighbours and Muslims in general. We must ask them to forgive us as often as we can especially our parents and near of kin as they are the closest to us and we are more likely to have wronged them or not fulfilled their rights. It is better to resolve all of our disputes with others in this life than for us to be in the court of Allah and risk giving away all of our good deeds to those we may have wronged. Once we run out of good deeds then we will have to incur their sins onto our accounts:

Abu Huraira (Ra) reported: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Whoever wrongs his brother in his honour or anything else should resolve the matter today before it cannot be resolved with gold and silver coins. If he has good deeds to his credit, they will be taken from him according to the measure of his injustice. If he has no good deeds left, he will bear the evil deeds of the one he has oppressed.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2317)

We must also not cause friction, tension nor argue with people unnecessarily. How can we expect to get closer to Allah by being arrogant, full of pride and having a bad character and manners? Surely having humility, being humble and having good character and manners are of the good characteristics that will enable us to get closer to Allah and Allah raises the ranks of such people in the Hereafter. The best person is the one who is best towards others:

Abu Darda (Ra) relates that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Nothing is heavier in the scales of a believer on the Day of Judgement than his good behaviour. Allah detests a person who is obscene and shameless”. (Tirmidhi)

The best friend in the sight of Allah is he who is the well-wisher of his companions, and the best neighbour is one who behaves best towards his neighbours. (Tirmidhi)

So for us to leave the major sins is an absolute priority. Otherwise we are truly deprived. Of course we are only human and it is inevitable that we will trip up every so often. Hence why we must make it a habit of ours to seek repentance immediately afterwards and as often as we can throughout the day and night. Almighty Allah says: "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and then turn to Him in repentance." (Qur'an, Hud: 3).

" ... and turn you all together in repentance to Allah O believers, that you may be successful" An-Noor (24:31)

So we must try to make it a habit to be in constant repentance for Allah loves those who repent and he finds any excuse to forgive his slaves as he is most gracious most merciful and we can never begin to comprehend his infinite generosity and mercy.

The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) states: "Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you would be, who suddenly finds his camel laden with supplies after losing it in a barren land" (Bukhari, Muslim)

Allah is most happy when his slave turns to him in meekness and in humility begging for forgiveness and mercy:

"Surely Allah loves those who turn unto him in repentance..." (2:222)

Therefore no matter what sins a person has committed, if they make a firm resolve to leave such sins and truly repent thereafter sincerely to Allah and then begins to obey Him, then surely Allah will turn to us in mercy and expiate our bad deeds, raise us in status and turn our bad deeds into good deeds. Repentance erases the sins that came before it and the one who repents from sin is like one who did not commit sin at all. How merciful is Allah!

After fulfilling our obligations unto Allah and leaving the major sins and turning to repentance as often as we can, then to help us to get closer to Allah then we should connect to him by connecting to the Qur'an on a daily basis. This is because the purpose of the Qur'an is not for us to recite it just in Ramadan and then leave it on the shelf to gather dust and cobwebs throughout the year, but for us to recite it on a daily basis just like we did in Ramadan.

It is for us to understand it, reflect on it and implement it into our daily lives. It is the Qur'an that will raise our ranks and elevate us, it will intercede for us when we will be desperate for intercession on that terrifying day (Qiyaamah). It will enable us to have patience and forbearance through any trial and hardship in life that may befall us. It will expand our knowledge and for us to get closer to Allah and get to know him. It will increase our imaan and help maintain it throughout the year. Most of all, it will give us firm realisation that Allah is the Almighty, the Greatest, and only he is deserving of all praise and worship.

It is also important for us act upon what we have read as we will be accountable on the day of judgement for not acting upon the verses of the Qur'an. The Sahaaba used to reflect upon the verses of the Qur'an and apply them in their lives, verses of the Qur'an were instructions for them to be acted upon and not merely to be read or memorised.

So we must not abandon the Qur'an after Ramadan, for we must continue to hold on to it. Even if it is one page a day with its meanings. It is better to do a little of a good action than nothing at all. For Allah loves the small actions that are constant: “The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if it is small.” (Bukhari).

We should also try to pray our Sunnah's and Nawafil. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) said: “The closest the slave will draw to his Lord, is when he is performing Sujood (prostrating while praying)” [Saheeh Muslim]

Allah says in Hadith Qudsi:….and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (voluntary deeds) until I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My Protection, I will protect him..." [Bukhari]

The Prophet (SallAllahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Ask (anything)." Rabi'ah said: "I ask of you to be your companion in paradise." The Prophet said: “Anything else?" Rabi'ah said: "That is it." The Prophet (SallAllahu alayhi wasallam) said to him: "Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers)." [Muslim]

The best of the Nawafil actions and prayers is Tahajjud: Allah Most High said, “Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of the night, and (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed. And some part of the night awake for its recital, as voluntary worship for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised estate.” [Qur’an, 17: 78-79]

Abu Hurayra (Ra) reports that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” [Muslim]

Abu Umama al-Bahili (Ra) reports that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Hold fast to night prayer, for it was the way of the righteous before you, a way of drawing closer to your Lord, an expiation for wrong deeds, and a shield from sin.” [Tirmidhi, and others] In some narrations, there is an addition, “And it repels sickness from the body.”

“Be vigilant in standing up [in prayer] at night, for it was the practice of the pious before you. It is a means of gaining proximity to Allah, expiation for transgressions and a barrier from sins.” (Tirmidhi)

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The closest that the Lord is to His slave is in the latter part of the night, so if you can be one of those who remember Allah at that time, then do so.” (Al-Tirmidhi and al-Nisaa’i)

For those of us that want to get closer to Allah, increase in our Taqwa (fearful awareness of Allah) throughout the day, increase our imaan and maintain it all the time and to reach the highest levels of Ihsaan in this life and Paradise in the next then this prayer is the habit for us to adopt throughout the year: Ihsaan is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, yet truly He is seeing you [Transmitted by Muslim]

{Who sees you (O Muhammad) when you stand up (alone at night for Tahajjud prayer)}, {Soorah ash-Shu'araa, Verse 218]

Praying Tahajjud also gives us the best opportunity to make Dua as Dua's are readily accepted in the latter part of the night. Through Dua, we can also strengthen our Imaan and our relationship with Allah, as well as heighten our awareness of cause and effect that can help inspire and motivate us to be closer to our Deen (way of life) and closer to our creator, in our lives. We find many reassurances throughout the Quran for those who make Dua. Allah the Exalted, has said: "And your Lord says: Pray unto me: and I will hear your prayer" (Quran 40:60), "Call upon your Lord Humbly and in secret" (Quran 7:55),

"When My servants question thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me" (Quran 2:186), "Is not He (best) who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and who relieves its suffering." (Quran 27:62)

In fact, it is disliked by Allah never to make Dua:"Whosoever does not supplicate to Allah, He will be angry with Him."[Saheeh Jaami`as-Sagheer #2414]

In order to warn those who are arrogant, or careless in making Dua, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "The most incapable person is the one who does not make Dua, and the most miserly person is the one who does not give salaam." [Sahih Al-Jami` no. 1055]

So we must get into the habit of making Dua as often as we can. Particularly during the times when Dua's are readily accepted: After the obligatory (Fard) prayers, between Adhan and Iqaamah, third portion of the night (Tahajud), In prostration, When it’s raining, whilst travelling on a journey, In the last hour of the day of Jummah, At the time of pre-dawn meal (Suhoor).
whilst fasting and just before opening the fast, when drinking Zamzam and after recitation of the Quran.

The remembrance of Allah in general throughout the day is crucial for us to be able to maintain our imaan at all times. Especially if we are going about our worldly duties, at work, in the shopping centres, driving, sitting, reclining, laying, in every situation. This is the best way for us to get closer to Allah and it is also the best of deeds:

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Should I not inform you about the best of your deeds, and the purest in the sight of Your Master (i.e. Allah), and that which will elevate you to the highest of ranks, and that which is better for you than the spending of gold and silver in charity, and that which is better for you than if you were to meet your enemies and strike their necks and they strike yours? (The Sahaabah (Ra) replied, ‘Yes, indeed’. The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] said,) The Dhikr of Allah. (Tirmidhi)

Iman comes from the heart. Therefore the best way of increasing our imaan is to give the heart what it needs at all times. So what does our heart need? What does it crave for? What is the food of the heart? It is the remembrance of Allah:

"…Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (13:28)

Surely if we want to maintain our imaan at all times then we must try our best to remember Allah at all times. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to make remembrance of Allah at all times and also encouraged us to do the same. When a man complained, "The laws of Islam are too heavy for me, so tell me something that I can easily follow," the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) told him, "Let your tongue be always busy with the remembrance of Allah." (Ahmad).

Those of us who do not remember Allah have hearts that are dead: Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari (Ra) reported: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "The similitude of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead.'' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Remembering Allah through good acts brings much peace and tranquillity to the heart. It also gives us a sense of Taqwa (fearful awareness of Allah), a consciousness that makes us realise that Allah Almighty is ever near and watching us at all times and that we should always strive to please Him and refrain from anything which angers and displeases him.

Remembering Allah night & day: O you who believe, remember Allah much. And glorify Him morning and evening (33:42-43)

The more we remember Allah the more our hearts and souls will be kept well fed and illuminated with imaan, peace and tranquillity.

Mu’adh ibn Jabal (Ra) reported: The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The people of Paradise will have no regrets, except for moments that passed by them in which they did not remember Allah.” (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 182)

Remembrance of Allah in places where others don't remember Allah as much: Remembrance of Allah in places where people are oblivious to the remembrance of Allah is like being steadfast on the path of Allah, when others are running away. (Targhib, p. 193, vol. 3 ref. Bazar and Tibrani)

Remembering Allah can be done anywhere and anytime. Allah says: "Celebrate Allah's praises, standing, sitting down, or lying on your sides." (Surah Nisaa:103).

See the following thread for what we can do to keep our tongues moist in the remembrance of Allah:

Easy Dhikr which is light on the tongue but heavy on the scales!

We must also give in charity (Sadaqah) as often as we can as it will bring us closer to Allah for he the almighty says: ‘By no means shall you attain Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, obedience to Allah), unless you spend (in Allah’s Cause) of that which you love’ (Surah Imraan 3:92)

It also goes without saying that one of the most important things we must do to safeguard our imaan is to avoid keeping bad company. We must avoid taking as friends those who indulge in open sin, speak too freely, who miss Salah, who do not dress modestly, whose behaviour is not good, who backbite, gossip too much and slander others.

The company of such people is poison for us; just to sit and talk to them may lead us to commit sins. Just as a person who sits for a long time with a perfume seller begins to smell nice, and a person who sits by a gutter cleaner begins to smell awful, similarly a person who spends time in the company of the wicked eventually gets affected badly by them.

Rather, we should seek out pious friends who fear Allah and who have the qualities of humility, charity, compassion, modesty and knowledge. If we sit with them we will always benefit and they will be a means for us to get closer to Allah!

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The case of the good companion and the bad companion is like that of the seller of musk and the blower of the bellows (iron-smith). As for the seller of musk, he will either give you some of the musk, or you will purchase some from him, or at least you will come away having experienced its good smell. Whereas the blower of the bellows will either burn your clothing, or at least you will come away having experienced its repugnant smell.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Remember: “All friends will be enemies of one another on that Day (Day of Judgment) except those of the virtuous.” (al-Qur’an 43:67)

I hope that helps. Please also refer to the following threads for more detailed help, advices and resources on increasing our imaan and getting closer to Allah:

Re: i dont feel close to God

Ramadan is a special time, when a lot more people practice and when we often notice major changes around.

Whatever the answers are, for you, a general answer is to keep up and increase good deeds, like classical "ibadah" (nsmaz, faat, dhikr, salawat.....) or "dunya" acts of kindness (like volounteering, making a great example, donatimg...).

Women need family love, mercy, protection and support.

If you spread ibadah/good deeds, it adds to your account and you get closer to Allah and experience often wonders in addition, and protections, salam, barakah, salawat, noor etc.

Keeping up a good company is important. Try to be good to your parants, encourage them in good deeds and visit them with gifts and support.

Don't rush your salat for anything, as you are standing in front of The One who is in charge of whatever you are rushing for!
