Help to make the Hereafter the focus of my life

    Bismillah hir Rahman nir Rahim

Assalamu aleikum brothers and sisters in Islam.

I don't want to burden you with a wall of text so I will keep it short. About 1 and a half year ago I suffered a psychosis due to smoking marijuana. I heard voices and whispers and thought crows were devils and seagulls were angels, may Allah forgive me! The ordeal ended with me jumping from an 8 meter tall building thinking that I could fly, shattering most the bones in my body when I hit the ground. The recovery process turned into a depression and turned me away from prayer and my deen. Now that I'm nearing the end game of this trial I am ready to turn back to my Lord and ask for forgiveness and strength. Help me with kind words and suggestions on how to make the Hereafter the focus of my life.

When Haatim Al-Asamm may Allah have mercy upon him was asked about his prayer, he replied: "When the time for prayer draws near, I perform a perfect ablution, go to where I will pray and sit there until I am fully cognisant of what I am about to do. Then, I stand up and pray, imagining that the Ka`bah is in front of my eyes, Paradise to my right, Hell to my left and the Angel of Death behind me. I imagine that it is the last prayer I will ever perform; I stand up in hope of Allah, His Paradise and His rewards, and in fear of Allah's torment in the Hellfire. I then say the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar – Allah is the Greatest) while having full attention. I recite the Quran calmly, bow humbly, prostrate with humility and attentiveness and then sit on my left leg, with my left foot laid on the floor and the right foot raised up - all the while praying with sincerity. Afterwards, I have no certainty about whether that prayer was accepted from me or not."

Increase in istighfaar and good deeds, and try to make up your missed prayers. Remember that Allah is merciful to His slaves, and when He loves someone He removes from him the distractions of this world and puts him through trials so that he may be humbled. You could be a better muslim after your experience than you were before it.

Marijuana doesn't cause any of the effects you listed. It can cause slight paranoia for some, for a limited time, make you hungry and tired, but that's about it.

You might have smoked synthetic marijuana which is highly dangerous with often unknown ingredients.

Re: Help to make the Hereafter the focus of my life

    Welcome to the forum..

Consider it is blessing from Allah that you are ready to turn back to Him. One thing for sure is, you have to realize that your intention and the result is not the same. Meaning - I have the best intention and do the best I have ever done, the result may still blow up in my face. As opposed to the effort being appreciated, it is condemned and I become hated. What will be my reaction? Of course, this is just an example, but the important thing to bear in mind that life is a test. It will always be, with every beat of the heart we are tested.

The realization that we are tested and as a result, we need to really be aware of our reaction and be in control of our emotions. So, going back to the example, if there was something we did do wrong, what have we learnt? How can we make amends? If we could find nothing wrong with what we did then how do we deal with it? Usually, what I have found (within myself) is that the hurt is caused because there was some expectations we had in doing something for someone. It is rare that we do something quite big in the cause of Allah.

It is almost always an expectation that there will be fireworks and monumental change and the path suddenly appears bright and clear in front of them, indicating clear and definite direction to follow.

    There is no tangible feedback.

So, coming back to what you are asking, Allah asks us to live for both worlds, now and for the hereafter. He has given us provisions for here on earth too. Hence we must learn to balance it well. So, despite our efforts, our success or failure is Allah's Will, we must strive as Allah's asks us to, we must sleep as Allah asks us to, we must eat from the provisions He has provided. We must be charitable with the provisions Allah has bestowed on us and community oriented.

So, if we accepted adversity with patience and still endeavor forwards with without losing faith but instead strengthening, it might be that Allah is giving you opportunity to wash off your sins. Losing faith is never the answer, perseverance is the only way. Have no expectations that life will be so much better now… nothing much will change. But will you?

Read the stories of the prophets, our life pales into insignificance...

    Wishing you a great stay.

The road to recovery and spiritual awakening is long and rocky, but you have made the first step in acknowledging that a problem exists and you need to change. I would advise you to start viewing the Quran Tafsir videos by Nauman Ali Khan, as that can really help to evoke feeling of love for the Deen. Also try and establish the basic tenets of faith and with the permission of Allah (SWT) you will feel the burdens of the dunya being lifted away from you.

    Walaikumaslaaam,

Sorry i have not read the above replies so i am not sure if this has been mentioned but i would definitely recommend and advise you to enrol on an islamic course. It doesn't have to be full-time course even if it is one day a week. Insha Allah the teacher will keep you focused, refresh your emaan and keep you on the straight path. Insha Allah & Ameen.

May you be successful on the day of qiymaat Ameen.

Re: Help to make the Hereafter the focus of my life

Remember you have to study hard in school to get a good job so you have money to buy the stuff you want. All that studying in school pays off when you get that good job and that paycheck. Those who don't study hard end up working at your local retail stores or oil change or McDonald's.

Now the same applies to life. Except the stakes are much much higher. If you work hard in this life in following the deen and pleasing your Lord then what you get in return is an easy life for eternity. On the contrary, if you don't work hard now then the eternity will be much much harder.

So work hard now and you can literally fly all you want in the next life.
