No, it is not ok. He should be respectful towards his wife, and if she angers him, then he should follow the quran and sunnah in regards to marital disputes.

If the kids are older and mature, then they should intervene in hopes of softening their father's heart. But if they are too young, then they should not be involved and the parents should not use them as a pawn in their disputes.

This can be very difficult because you do not want to overstep the limits but those can get really blurry when you're trying to stop abuse.
Do your best to be polite enough and not make the father angry
No it's not okay to insult your wife by calling her names. In his very last sermon the Prophet PBUH mentioned the importance of being kind to your wife and I think its safe to say that answers your question.
As for kids intervening, it depends on the parties involved. If intervening will only make matters worse for both parties (children and mother) then I think matters should be taken to a Shaykh.

nope no way; wife is to be treated with love and respect; not called names and such horrible one's too!
if you kids? are on friendly terms with your dad [such as can get away with 'scolding him a bit' in such circumstances then it may make him feel guilty and ashamed to see his kids dislike it very much so i suppose it will be ok for you kids to tell him 'off' a bit but not too harsh though! . just say 'dad, dont say such nasty word to mum' etc etc
I think that is childish, immature and really rude. You need to evaluate your actions and examine your brain. You should rather sit down together and talk politely, honestly and openly and in a loving tone to discuss in indifference you both may have against each other. Allah is All aware of what you do. Have fear of Allah!
As others have said............ Women are to be treated with respect, they are humans, too, ya know. Only a coward would insult his wife without any reason or restraint.
Islam isn't some "tool" for one to "use".
