Question about if praying in mosque is obligatory if you can't hear adan?

    Report bad ads?

So I am confused on this topic, I love in USA, so pretty much non of the mosques make the adan loud enough that even if you live next to the mosque you can't hear adan for obvious reasons.

Is it an obligation on me to pray in mosque? Will I be sinful if I pray at home if I can't hear adan from mosque?

The fatwa that I got from islamqa is the following: https://islamqa.info/en/answers/8918...-in-the-mosque

    1. They state the fuqaha differed on it but that "most sound" opinion is that its obligatory and the proof is

Quran verse [al-Nisa’ 4:102]: “When you (O Messenger Muhammad) are among them, and lead them in As-Salaah (the prayer), let one party of them stand up [in Salaah (prayer)] with you taking their arms with them; when they finish their prostrations, let them take their positions in the rear and let the other party come up which have not yet prayed, and let them pray with you”

The commentary on this verse indicate that praying in congregation is wajib but doesn't really mention mosque.

    2. They give hadith proof:

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, I was thinking of ordering that wood be gathered, then I would have ordered that the call to prayer be given, then I would have told a man to lead the people in prayer, then I would have gone from behind and burned the houses of men who did not attend the (congregational) prayer down around them. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if any one of them had known that he would get a bone covered with good meat or two sheep’s feet with meat in them, he would have turned up for the ‘Isha’ prayer.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 618; Muslim, 651

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are ‘Isha’ and Fajr. If they knew what (reward) is in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl. I was thinking of ordering that the call to prayer be given, then I would tell a man to lead the people in prayer, and I would go out with men carrying bundles of wood to people who do not come to the prayers, and I would burn their houses with fire around them.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 626; Muslim, 651

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: A blind man [Ibn Umm Maktoom] came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, I have no one to lead me to the mosque,” and he asked the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to grant him a concession allowing him to pray in his house, and he allowed him that. But when he turned away he said, “Can you hear the call to prayer?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then answer it.” According to a version narrated by Abu Dawood (552) and Ibn Maajah (792) he said: “I do not think there is any concession for you.”

So this to me is more than enough proof personally that praying in mosque is obligatory, especially after reading the hadith about the blind man.

Now my question is, what about if I can't hear the adan EVENTHOUGH I live like 7 minutes away from my nearby mosque? Everyday I have to use my phone and muslimpro to estimate when the salah starts in my mosque because I can't hear adan.

I realize I prob should ask my shyakh on this topic but if anyone can give me a fatwa in related to someone living close to mosque in America or non muslim countries where adan is not called outloud, is it still obligation because you assume that if they called the adan you could probably hear it or is the hadith in regards to praying in mosque being obligation is only in regards to whether you can hear adan or not regardless of distance?!

Re: Question about if praying in mosque is obligatory if you can't hear adan?

Hearing the adhan is not a condition for performing congregational prayers at the mosque. It suffices to know prayer times through any means such as watches or others to attend them at the mosque.

A blind man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have no one to guide me to the mosque." He asked the Messenger of Allah for permission to pray at his house and the Prophet granted it to him. But when the man turned to leave, the Prophet called him and said, "Can you hear the adhan?" He said, "Yes". The Prophet then said, "Respond to it (by going to the mosque)" [Muslim].

The above hadith enjoined all Muslims who lived during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), including the blind, to attend congregational prayers at the mosque as long as they could hear the adhan since it was the only means for knowing prayer times. However, at present, there are other means such as watches and calendars. Therefore, it suffices you for this rite to make the adhan inside the mosque.

The hadith does not include anything, implicit or otherwise, that states the permissibility of refraining from attending congregational prayers at the mosque for those who do not hear the adhan.

We therefore call upon our Muslim brothers in Greece not to issue fatawa unless they are specialized in the sciences of the Shari'ah [Islamic law] so as not to confuse Muslims or lead them to commit sins.

Re: Question about if praying in mosque is obligatory if you can't hear adan?

I don't know brother you probably are right but from my basic understand on the topic as is as follows.

The adan in the instance of the hadith signifies distance, therefore, if you are in a close proximity and you can hear adan then you have to pray it in mosque to answer it, but if you are slightly further away from it and you do not hear the adan then it is not an obligation. Every time I looked up this topic the person giving fatwa says "can you hear adan? Then its mandatory. If you can't hear it then its not manadatory"

Their reasoning is that the adan from the mosque becomes mandatory on men because you are supposed to answer an adan no matter where you are as long as you hear it. The meaning of adan in it self is the call to prayer. Same thing as the hadith you mentioned above, when someone hears the adan they have to answer it, even if blind!

I get your point in regards to presently we are able to check our phones and time the prayer and can be in the mosque just in time for salah regardless of whether we hear adan or not. However, based off my research, if we are using adan as a means of judging distance, if a mosque is near me by 10 minutes and in normal conditions, if we were in a Muslim country I would probably hear the call to prayer, but if a person who lives 45 minutes away and can't hear the adan, but according to you, he can still use his phone to time his prayer and still come to the mosque, therefore it is obligatory to pray in mosque for these two persons regardless if they heard adan or not? What about someone who lives 2 hour away?

Please note I am only asking if its obligatory to pray the fard prayers in mosque if you do not hear adan, the fard prayers should still be prayed on time wherever you are, its just do you pray fard prayer in home or in mosque if you do not hear adan?

I understand for prayers like Friday prayer, obviously we have to answer this no matter what.

Also I try my level best to pray atleast Isha in mosque as well even though I can't hear adan here.

Here is assimalhakim fatwa on topic: https://youtu.be/MrrzIVXHyZQ
