I am just curious how can one become an ulema (especially if you are a sister)? I want to become one but I heard that it's really hard?

An Alima is simply one with knowledge. Read lots of books. Study Islam on your own. Insha'Allah it won't be difficult.

We need more muslim women scholars.

I will give you some sites to study from.
Read all the fatawa and articles on this site:
http://www.islamonline.net/english/index.shtml

And these too:

If you are serious about getting a degree, I would recommend travelling to Medina University in Saudi, or studying at the Islamic Universities in Malaysia.

Or Umm Al Qura Uni in Makkah.

But you need mahrams to travel abroad.. And Saudi Arabia requires you to enter with a mahram, won't let you in without one.

If you can't travel abroad, try taking education by an alimah that may be in your locality. Learning from sites is great...but usually when you're learning by somebody they teach you Arabic, which will be very useful when reading ahadith in Arabic and stuff. :)

Its not hard...just takes a lot of dedication, like any other field of education. :)
