Nearly 3 million Muslim who participated in the holy pilgrimage to Mecca this year, the Hajj, made the climactic ascent Monday to Mount Arafat, Islam's holiest site, to ask Allah for his mercy and forgiveness.

Saudi Arabia's top cleric called for Islamic unity to fight the West's war on Islam.

After finishing their prayers at Mount Arafat on Monday, the pilgrims rushed down the hill to the Muzdalifah, a few miles away, to collect the pebbles they will use in the stoning of the devil, one of the last rituals of the holly journey of the Hajj.

In an attempt to ease the crowding at the site of the stoning, a religious edict was issued two years ago allowing the pilgrims to perform the stoning before dawn prayers.

Hundreds of Muslims died in previous years during this ritual as a result of stampedes.

"It's better to go now, before the crowd gets too big. They have had a lot of problems — stampedes and other horrors. We want to finish early," said Turkish pilgrim Jawat Ahmet.

Addressing the nearly three million Muslim pilgrims at a mosque on the plain of Mount Arafat, Sheikh Abdul-Aziz al-Sheikh, the kingdom's grand mufti drew the attention to the critical challenges the Muslim Ummah, or nation is facing nowadays, including false claims of terrorism and human-rights abuses as well as efforts to change school textbooks.

"Oh, Muslim nation, there is a war against our creed, against our culture under the pretext of fighting terrorism. We should stand firm and united in protecting our religion," he said.

"Islam's enemies want to empty our religion of its contents and its meaning," said al-Sheikh. "But the soldiers of God will be victorious."

The faithful called out: "Amen."
