In books written for teaching five time prayers or salah, the writers say that one has to verbally pronounce intention or niyah of each salah in Arabic language. But they never mention the source wherefrom they have learnt that verbal reading of niyah is essential for salah.

Investrigation in the matter has revealed that niyah or intention refers to determination of the mind to perform salah and accordingly begin the same with Takbir only. The prophet(sm) never read the niyah verbally. So, telling people to read niyah verbally is an extra action added to salah, which was not done or asked to be done by the prophet(sm). This is bidah or innovation in salah and should be avoided.
