The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (Supkem) called for the release of two Kenyan engineers kidnapped in Iraq last week.

Supkem chairman, Prof Abdulghafur El-Busaidy, blamed the abduction on "capital and unwarranted" invasion of Iraq.

"Were it not for the crude invasion of Iraq, the destruction of Iraqi land and Government and the subsequent kidnapping, arrest, torture and killings would not have taken place," he said Wednesday at a press conference at Supkem offices in Nairobi.

Gunmen kidnapped telecommunication engineers George Noballa and Moses Munyao, employees of Orascom Telcom Holding SAE, on January 18.

Supkem said it asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to send a delegation to Iraq to plead with the captors.

So far, the Kenyan government hasn’t replied to our request, El-Busaidy said.

The group also said it is in contact with Kenya's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Yusuf Nzibo, adding that he assured them of support.

The hostages’ families attended Wednesday’s press conference and appealed for an unconditional release of the captives.

“We wish to plead for mercy on their lives and pray for their safety in the hands of those holding them,” the wives of the hostages, Mrs Agatha Noballa and Mrs Florence Munyao.
