A proposal to replace GMT is made at a conference titled “Makkah, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice” attended by Muslim clerics and scientists.

Doha (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Muslim scientists and clerics have called for the adoption of Makkah time in lieu of GMT, arguing that the Saudi city is the true centre of the Earth. The call was issued at a conference held in the Gulf state of Qatar under the title: Makkah, the Centre of the Earth, Theory and Practice.

One geologist at the Qatar conference said Makkah’s longitude is perfectly aligned with magnetic north and should therefore replace the English city, which has been measuring time zones since 1884, when the United Kingdom was a major colonial power, something that ought to change.

Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawya cleric, said modern science had at last provided evidence that Makkah was the true centre of the Earth, proof, he said, of the greatness of the Muslim “qibla”—the Arabic word for the direction Muslims turn to when they pray.

Participants of the conference also reviewed the “Makkah Watch,” an invention by a French Muslim which reportedly rotates counter-clockwise and displays Makkah's direction from any point in the world.

The conference is part of a trend called “Ijaz al-Qur‘an” or “miraculous nature of the holy text,” which tries to find precedents for modern science from passages in the Qur‘an.

great

they dont say plesae people change your timings to our timings. no one is going to do that. they change their own timings first and recognise only that timing, so on a small scale atleast it will become recognised.

Hey, as long as Greenwich mean time doesn't change to, say, Chico Time, I don't think anybody has any cause to complain whatsoever. At all. Nope.

The article itself says very little or nothing as to why Mecca is the center of the Earth and why GMT should be replaced with Mecca time.

I've heard about this more than a year ago, I remember reading an interview with a scholar saying things about Mecca being aligned with certain magnetic fields, and something about radiation ... it can be found on youtube.
There's a web hoax about Neil armstrong proving Mecca is the centre of the Earth, does it have any connection with this event ... ?
I read the BBC article about the conference, it says nothing.

Can you provide a non-muslim soirce about this? BBC would be fine.

The article speaks of a bunch of people who claim Mecca is the geographical centre of the world, so I'd like to see the proof for that.
Mecca may be the centre of the world in some other way but that's not the issue right now.

Dunno, Athens or Rome, both actually, for their historical and philosophical significance.

I'm sure you're familiar to some extent with the significance these two cities and the cultures and empires they represented pose for the western society as well for the rest of the world.
I could have included Jerusalem/Middle East as well.
No, BBC didn't say that, at least not to my knowledge.

Whoa, thats amaaaaaazing, look at it!

At first i didnt realy understand it, but that is literally the centre, the Globe in that position shows all the lands. You cant tilt the Earth in any other way to make all the lands show, accept that Makkah is in the centre!

Thats like, whoaaaaa!

Takbeer!

Sorry, I thought that was the question.
The Earth is sphere-like, it doesn't have a geographical centre. There's the poles though.
The centre of the Earth is somewhere in the inner core.

I can't find anything.
The entire thing is not about Mecca being the centre of the earth, it never says that, not even in 3.1.
What were you trying to say?

Greetings,

The centre of the Earth is its core, isn't it?

All other speculation is nonsense. The surface of the Earth doesn't have a 'centre' pretty much by definition.

Professor Lidenbrock journeyed to the centre of the Earth.

There he found a thing called 'The Topic'.

Betcha glad I ain't Jules Verne, eh?

that diagram proves nothing but the fact that in America you have to face north to pray towards qibla rather than southeast as it seems from a mecator map.

At first i didnt realy understand it, but that is literally the centre, the Globe in that position shows all the lands. You cant tilt the Earth in any other way to make all the lands show, accept that Makkah is in the centre!
It is intentionally distorted so that all the land shows at the same time, and so that Makkah is in the centre. They needed to distort it so the diagram would work. Somebody just took it out of the proper context and pretended it was proof that Makkah is at the 'centre' of the world.
