The Time to Establish the Prayer

A lecture highlighting the grave consequences of leaving the prayer, and how we should establish the prayer and become steadfast upon it. The speaker discusses (according to the Qur’an and Sunnah) whether the one who leaves the prayer is a Muslim, or has left the fold of Islam?

AsalamuAlaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

I recommend others to listen to the lecture but for those of you who have not got much time on their hands, here are my notes..

Time to establish the prayer notes

Intro:

-Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) asked his creation (the angels) to prostrate to Adam (Alayhi salaam) and this prostration was a prostration of magnification and not one of worship, because all worship belongs to Allah (Subhana wa ta’ala) alone.

-They all prostrated except iblis (Shaytaan), he refused to prostrate to Adam (Alayhis salaam), he was known to be proud and for that reason, he was amongst the disbelievers, Allah (subhana wa Ta’ala) made him amongst the lowly ones, the ones we seek refuge in from Allah (subahana Wa ta’ala) and the one who is rejected.

-He knows that Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) exists and knows that he is his Lord, yet he refuses to prostrate, so what about those who know that Allah (subahana Wa ta’ala) exists and they have been commanded to pray this prostration of Ibaadah (worship) but they do not pray, so how low must they be in the sight of Allah (Subhana Wa ta’ala).

Virtues of prayer:

-This prayer that we perform was not obliged to the people at the time of thr prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam), there was a special jouney known as the miraaj (ascension) when the prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) ascended to the seventh heaven. When he was addressed by Allah (Subahan wa Ta’ala) at that point the salah was made obligatory upon the Muslim ummah. This signifies the great nature of the salah (prayer).

-It was the first obligation made upon this Ummah, the prayer came before all the obligations, before hajj before zakah etc etc

-The prophet (salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) when he sent messengers and made dua calling others to Islaam, like then said to Mu’adh Ibn Jabl (Radi Allahu Anhu) he said to him, Oh Mu’adh you are going to a people, amongst the people of the book, so let the first thing you call to be the Shahada (Testimony of faith) when you go out to give da’wah to the people of the book (Jews and Christians) if they obey you in the Shahada, then you must tell them that Allah (Subahana Wa Ta’ala) has obligated upon them the 5 daily prayers. When an individual takes the Shahadah, the salah is the first thing he/she is obligated to perform as a Muslim.

-It is the first action that will be judged on the day of judgement, after the shahadah ‘Laa ilaha illalallah’

-It is the second pillar of Islaam. The prophet (salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) mentioned Islaam being built upon 5 things. The first and second being the Shahadah and the Salah. If we were to analyse the Qur’an in depth like some of the past prominent scholars have done so, we would find that there is no greater Fardh or Waajib greater than that of Salaah.

-According to some Scholars ‘Salah’ has been mentioned in the Qur’an over 80 times, perhaps more.

-This obligation does not cease when an individual faces illness. If he is able to stand, then he must pray standing, if he is unable to pray standing he must pray sitting, and is he cannot sit he may pray lying down, and if he is unable to move any of his limbs but his eyes, then he should even pray with his eyes. Even the traveller on a journey must pray, no matter if you are free, a slave, rich, poor, healthy or not it is obligatory upon us all. SubhanAllah.

-Salah will be the last thing to be lifted from the people and taken away on the Day of Judgement

-The Salah is a means of protecting an individual from committing immoral things as Allah (subhana Wa Ta’ala) has stated in Al-Qur’an.

-Salah is the dearest deed to Allah (Subahan Wa Ta’ala)

-The messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) was asked by Abdullah Ibn Mas’oud (Radi Allahu Anhu): Ya Rasulullah, what is the dearest action to Allah (Subahana Wa Ta’ala) and so the prophet replies: It is to offer the Salah at its appointed time.

-When a person prays the sins that he has committed between two prayers are forgiven. The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) said: If a person perform wudu (Ablution) correctly and offers a compulsory congregational prayer then Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) will forgive his sins committed between that prayer and the next. (Bukhari).

-The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) asked: If there was a river in front of somebody’s house, and a person bathes in that river 5 times a day, will there be any dirt left on him? And the companions replied, ‘No oh messenger of Allah’ so the prophet said, likewise the small sins that a person may commit while praying 5 times a day, those 5 prayers will wash away those sins. Alhamdhulillah.

These are just a few of many benefits of Salah.

The rulings of the one who does not pray:

-Any individual who rejects the obligation of prayer upon him, this person is a disbeliever from the consensus of all the Muslims (scholars’ of Islaam). Even if one prays 5 times a day but believes that he/she is not obligated upon the 5 daily prayers, he or she has made it something known as Istihlaal (he has made the leaving of the prayer halal) and hence known as a disbeliever.

-What happens to those that do not pray out of laziness or neglect the prayers,

The opinion of the Sahabah/Early Muslims: The person who does not pray due to neglect or laziness is a disbeliever (Apostate-has now left the fold of Islaam).

The opinion of a group of Scholars: Believe that the individual is still a Muslim, however if he refuses to pray but he should be killed

The opinion of a minority of scholars: Is still a Muslim, not to be killed but put in jail for a period of time. (Approx 6 months)

-Allah (Subhana Wa ta’ala) says: The people of Paradise will ask the people of hell, what is it that made you go into the hell fire, what is the sin that you committed, the first thing that they reply will be, we were not of those who prayed.

-The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) said: Between a man kufr (Disbelief) and shirk (Polytheism-Associating others with Allah), is the leaving of, of the prayer. And Allah (Subahan Wa Ta’ala) clearly states that he does not forgive that someone commits polytheism with him but he forgives whatever is less than that, to whomsoever he wills.

-The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasalam) said: The covenant between us (Muslimeen) and them (Disbelievers) is the prayer.

-The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) was in a gathering, in this gathering the sahabah and the prophet (Salallahu ALayhi Wasalam) got up to pray, all except one of the sahabah (Mahtn – RadiAllahu anhu), afterwards the prophet (salallahu ALayhi Wassalam) asked this Sahabi, why didn’t you pray? Are you not a Muslim man? And the Sahabi replied, brother I am a messenger of Islaam oh messenger of Allah, but I have already prayed at home with my family. So this shows that if you are a Muslim you would pray and if you were not a Muslim you would not pray.

-The one who guards his prayers will have a light, proof and safety on the day of judgement.

-Abu Huraira (RadiAllahu Anhu) narrated: the leaving of, of something has never taken someone outside the fold of Islaam except the leaving of, of the prayer.

-The fasts of the one who does not pray are nullified the charity that he/she gives is void, the hajj that he perform will be invalid.

-Every single prayer that a person misses must be made up for.

Practical way in which one can be steadfast in prayers:

-We must have a firm resolve in our hearts that we are going to pray and not miss a single salah inshaAllah.

-We must not give up Salah, it can be hard to pray but we must not give up.

-We must use everything we can to help us remember the Salah e.g. Alarm clock

-Keeping good company, being in the presence of those who pray and advise them to pray

-We should make dua to Allah (Subhana Wa ta’ala): He said: supplicate to me and I will respond. SubhanAllah.

-We should also learn the meaning of Salah, we should know what we are saying inshaAllaah.

-The prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wassalam) said the one who guards and observes his Fajr and Asr Salah will enter jannah. Allahu Akbar.

-When we are praying we should imagine that we are in the company of Allah (Subahana Wa ta’ala) which will make it more enjoyable.

May Allah (Subahana Wa Ta’ala) make us among those who guard their prayers especially the Fajr prayers.
