:salamext:

I want to know the islamic view on wearing colored contact lenses.

Praise be to Allaah.

There are two types of contact lenses:

Ophthalmic contact lenses: those that are used to correct long- or short-sightedness etc. There is nothing wrong with using this kind of contact lenses on the advice of a specialist eye-doctor.

Coloured cosmetic contact lenses:
these come under the rulings on adornment. If a woman wears them for her husband, there is nothing wrong with it. If she is wearing them where others will see her too, then it should not cause any fitnah or temptation. There is also the condition that they should not cause any harm, and there should be no element of cheating or deceiving, such as a woman wearing them when she meets the man who is proposing marriage to her. Also, they should not be extravagantly expensive, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… and waste not by extravagance…” [al-An’aam 6:141].

And Allaah knows best.

asalam alaikum wr wb,

A woman shouldnt beautify herself for ghair mahrams - that is the ruling for adornments. I mean a man may not be find a woman's eye colour attractive but if she were to enhance it with contacts, he might change his mind. So the element of fitnah is there. Also isn't it like saying this colour is better than the one Allah gave my eyes? :? :hmm:

Also, they should not be extravagantly expensive, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… and waste not by extravagance…” [al-An’aam 6:141].
I don't know what this verse has to do with something that can contribute to fitnah, as extravagance is forbidden in halal stuff only, since we're not allowed to spend on haram stuff at all.

P.S. BBL with daleel inshaAllah.

wa alaikum asalam wr wb.

Sister, I have posted a fatwa from Islamqa, which is one of the respected websites of Islaam. And the ruling had been made by a respected scholar. InshaaAllaah of you do not agree with it, you can contact the scholar on the Islamqa website.

Selam aleykum,

What if she uses coloured contact-lenses to decrees the attention, not to 'enhance' her beauty? Like if all women in that village had dark eyes, and she just happens to have light blue which all men find attractive, she avoids getting attention by having dark-coloured lenses (when a man proposes she of course tells the truth, but in daily/random use)?

Also isn't it like saying this colour is better than the one Allah gave my eyes? :? :hmm:
That could then apply to those who go tanning aswell (halal enviroment).. Or those that colour their hair (not black).. No?

I'm just asking. lol I'm curious.

:wasalamex I remember someone asking a question about lens and I posted the same fatwaa from Islamqa. So inshaaAllaah if anyone has any questions, they can view this topic (or perhaps if another mod sees fit, they can merge them together) and benefit from this inshaaAllaah. For that reason, I'm going to close this thread inshaaAllaah.
