C'mon France or Spain! France cos it's closer to UK and Spain cos most of the Liverpool players are spanish and also the manager Rafael Benitez.

It's really sad that England couldn't make it through, they really need to get their priorities straight, they're not going to win anything if they dont do something, they also have a great squad so the players/team is not a problem.

Well as England are not in it there is less to be happy about (mutters)

As for yanks, well they play girly rounders (baseball) they don't like manly games!

Christano is the best player in the world, though he missed today. Pepe scored a blinder. I'm hoping it's Portugal that wine the Euro, but Germany are the ones who'll win. I'm backing both!

Marco Aurélio, full name: Marco Aurélio Brito dos Prazeres, also known as Mehmet Aurélio (born December 15, 1977 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian-Turkish footballer who currently plays for Fenerbahçe.

He played for Flamengo (21 goals in 123 matches) and Olaria (1 goal in 17 matches) in Brazil before moving to Turkey.[1] Then, he joined Turkish side Trabzonspor from Brazilian club Olaria where he played for three years (64 caps, 15 goals).

After his contract expired, he signed for Fenerbahçe. During his spell in Turkish clubs, he acquired Turkish citizenship [2] in 2006 and consequently adopted the name Mehmet.[3]

Mehmet Aurélio was called up to the Turkish national squad for the first time by the coach Fatih Terim for a friendly match against Luxembourg on August 16, 2006. Thereby, he became the first naturalized player to be capped for Turkey.[4]

Turkey is a Muslim majority country and it's officially secular.

But it's unfair to call the Turkish people generally as non-practising Muslims because of the "Secular Extremism" of the country.

The Turks living in Malaysia are very religious.

Is being fanatical about the islamic religion bad?? since when did being extremely humble, extremely peaceful, extremely generous become such an evil thing, im an extreme muslim and alhamdulilah and before you use the terrorist card let me just tell you in a peacefull manner that theres no place for terrorism in islam,it doesnt teach it! nor does it promote it in anyway

No, I didn't mean it in that way. I just meant it's not thrust into your face as as say if you went to SA, Iran where it's a religious state. And the perception of these countries is Islamic. Not so with Turkey or Egypt. :-[

I'm aware of that! I don't need to be educated on Islam I have knowledge of it thanks.

Fanatical is not the best way to be about anything. It can cloud judgement. As it has with those that take up suicide missions.

Brazilian footballers which hold Turkish nationality and their Turkish name...

1) Marco Aurélio Brito dos Prazeres (Mehmet Aurelio)

2) João Batista Casemiro Marques (Mertol Karatay)

3) Fransergio Euripedes Ferreira Bastos (Ferhat Sergio)

4) Rafael Marques Mariano (Rafet)

5) Márcio Ferreira Nobre (Mert Nobre)

6) Wederson Luiz da Silva Medeiros (Ali Osman Gökçek Vederson)

Is it a requirement for them to convert Islam in order to be Turkish citizens or they only have to change their names?

But they use religion as a way to justlify these animalistic acts! - They should be dealt with from within as they are destroying the name of Islam.

Players rating! Germany vs Poland!
GERMANY

Lehmann 6.5 – Looked shaky at times in the first half, and his handling was less than secure. Fumbled a cross in the first 40 seconds that could have led to Kryznowek scoring. However he made a fine stop from Saganowski late on.

Lahm 8 – Neutralised Kryznowek very well, never losing out in a one-on-one battle. The most impressive of the Germany defenders. Also did well offensively.

Metzelder 6 – Looks completely unfit after his long injury absence and will be crucified by a better opponent. Having said this he didn’t do too bad tonight and made one vital interception from a Guerriero cross.

Mertesacker 6.5 – Won everything in the air as would be expected, and was reasonably solid on the floor.

Jansen 5.5 – Struggled really badly against the dangerous Lobodzinski in the first period, but improved after the break.

Fritz 7 – Very lively down the German right. Crossed well and gave his marker Golanski a number of problems. Somewhat surprisingly taken off on 55 minutes.

Frings 7.5 – Was superb in the first 25 minutes, then faded a little, before regaining his dominance in the final 30. A class act when he is on form.

Ballack 7 – Provided a superb through pass for Klose’s early chance, and had some shorts spells of excellence throughout the game. Brought out a superb save from Boruc at 1-0.

Podolski 8.5 – Germany’s best player in the first half, getting behind Golanski at will, and putting his side into the lead. Added a second after the break with a thumping volley into the top corner. Man of the match as bro guven rightly said:)

Klose 7 – Wasted a one-on-one chance early on when he tried to pass to Gomez instead of shoot himself. Made up for it soon after by setting up Podolski for the opener. Also involved in the second goal.

Gomez 6 – Excellent pass that started the move for Podolski’s first, but a disappointment thereafter. Missed a good chance at 1-0.

Subs

Schweinsteiger 6.5 – Has had a poor season but did relatively well and got behind Golanski, and also had a few shots at goal.

Hitzlsperger 6 – Only had 15 minutes to make an impact, and helped close out the game.

Kuranyi N.A – Only on the field for a matter of seconds.

POLAND

Boruc 7 – Offered little protection from the defence in front of him, and could do nothing on either goal. Made one stunning stop from Ballack at 1-0. Undoubtedly a top-class keeper.

Wasilewski 5.5 – Could not cope with Podolski in the first half, although he improved after the break.

Bak 5 – The 35-year-old showed all of his advancing years tonight. His lack of pace was a real problem, and his command of the defensive line was also non-existent.

Zewlakow 5 – Almost identical assessment to his centre back partner Bak. Pushed up suicidally when Germany scored their first goal.

Golanski 4.5 – The fourth and final member of the Marx brothers. His mistake prior to Podolski’s second was of Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Zippo proportions.

Dudka 6.5 – Neat and tidy in the middle of the park, and held his own for spells, but no cutting edge to his game.

Lewandowski 7 – Did well in the centre of midfield. Distributed the ball, and also got forward well, firing in a number of long-range shots.

Lobodzinski 7 – Caused havoc down the right in the first half, beating his marker Jansen on a number of occasions. Also forced a fine save out of Lehmann. Faded after the break and was substituted.

Zurawski 5.5 – Never really got into the match, and missed a fine chance, scuffing the ball wide when well placed. Subbed at half time.

Kryznowek 6 – Gave his all as usual, but got little change down the flank against Lahm. Had more success when he cut inside, and had a few half chances, one coming in the first 40 seconds.

Smolarek 5.5 – A disappointment. Would have been expected to cause the Germany centre backs some problems but it never really happened for him.

Subs

Guerreiro 7 – Gave the Poles a lift after his introduction at half time, showing some Brazilian-like touches.

Piszczek 6 – Never got into the game after replacing the impressive Lobodzinski.

Saganowski 6 – Almost grabbed a consolation at the end but was denied by a fine Lehmann save.

Ronaldo is also good but i dont know sometimes he needs to perform in the big games, what i mean for example is the brazilian ronaldo scored a hattrick in a champions league knockout against .man u. some time back, its these performances that make you a world class player.ronaldo has the potential to be a really class player if he tracks back, stops moaning and diving

Lol yeah most of the Italians are getting pretty old now, especially that Del Pierro I remember admiring him when I started getting into football years ago :). Del Pierro's an exception though I guess - he's still pretty good. Tonight there was obviously a big flaw in Italy's defence, they better sort it out though because they have to win next game against Romania if they have even a chance of getting through. Holland were amazing - that Schneider (is he called that?)'s goal was just wow.

By the way, does anyone have the information that was mentioned before the 2nd half about Materazzi and Manchester reporting Real Madrid to FIFA? I didn't hear it when they said :(.

Its on here bro, http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=728911 the complain..

Official players rating!!

HOLLAND

Van der Sar 8.5 – Had little to do in the first half but proved his worth after the break, with a simply world class stop from Pirlo’s free kick. Also saved a one-on-one from Grosso.

Boulahrouz 7 – Has barely played in two years, but was a big surprise tonight. Coped well with Di Natale’s pace down the Italian left.

Mathijsen 6.5 – Relatively solid at the heart of the Dutch defence. Organised those around him.

Ooijer 6.5 – Most would have tipped him to be crucified by Toni, but the Blackburn veteran coped well with the prolific forward.

Van Bronckhorst 9 – Absolutely outstanding. Completely neutralised Camoranesi defensively, while he headed off the line before providing a superb cross-field pass in the build-up to the second goal. Also scored Holland’s third to crown a superb display. Man-of-the-match.

De Jong 7 – Took charge of the midfield in the first half, and kept his discipline in front of the back four despite heavy second half Italian pressure.

Engelaar 7 – Similar assessment for De Jong. He may not look like a footballer but the Goliath-sized midfielder was a physical presence in the middle-of-the-park.

Sneijder 8 – Outstanding was the Real Madrid man. His shot set-up Van Nistelrooy’s goal, while he scored the brilliant second goal, which at present is the goal of the tournament.

Van der Vaart 8 – Surely set to join a European giant after this performance. Skilful, creative, and a delightful array of passes, including one that put Van Nistelrooy clean through at 2-0.

Kuyt 8 – Battled hard as usual, and had the final assist on both the second and third Dutch goals. A real pain in the backside for any defender.

Van Nistelrooy 7.5 – Terrorised Barzagli and Materazzi. Scored Holland’s opener, although I will leave it up to you to decide if it was offside. Also could have had two others, squandering one-on-one chances.

Subs

Van Persie 6 – Looked reasonably sharp on his injury comeback and went close with one effort.

Heitinga 6 – Shored up the defence in the closing stages.

Afellay 6 – Almost grabbed a fourth with a vicious long-range shot.

ITALY

Buffon 6 – Partly to blame for first goal after a poor punch. Made one outstanding save from van Nistelrooy at 0-2. Did not communicate with his defenders as much as he should have.

Panucci 5.5 – Below par. Questionable whether he has the pace to play at right back in an international tournament. Did better when switched to the centre.

Barzagli 4 – Has never impressed without Cannavaro to hold his hand and this was proved tonight after a shocking performance. Certainly not the next in a long-line of great Italian defenders judged on this.

Materazzi 3.5 – Confirmed his dreadful club season with a stinker of a game. Second to every ball, positionally all over the place, and no help at all to Barzagli. If it was up to me, he would never play for Italy again.

Zambrotta 6 – The best of a bad bunch, although improved greatly as the game went on, going on one excellent run in the second half down the left.

Gattuso 6 – Battled as usual in midfield, and slowly took charge as the game wore on, but as proven for Milan this season his levels have quite clearly dropped from the World Cup two years ago.

Pirlo 7 – Unsurprisingly Italy’s best midfielder. Brilliant through-ball to put Grosso through on goal, while he would have scored with a magnificent free-kick, had it not been for Van der Sar’s miraculous save.

Ambrosini 5 – Baffling decision by Ancelotti to start him ahead of De Rossi, and he clearly was not in the same league as Sneijder and Van der Vaart. Missed a chance late on.

Camoranesi 4 – Anonymous on the right hand side of the trident. Quite why Donadoni waited until the 75th minute to take him off is another mystery.

Di Natale 6 – Far from Italy’s worst player. Di Natale worked hard, and had a few efforts, including one sweet volley that would have gone in had it not been straight at Van der Sar.

Toni 5 – Another disappointment. Looked strangely tired after a long campaign. Missed one glorious one-on-one opportunity.

Subs

Grosso 8 – Donadoni's worst decision was not starting Grosso, who caused havoc down the left after coming on. Could and should have scored when alone with Van der Sar.

Del Piero 7 – Excellent after coming on. Looked really sharp, was inventive, and had two fine efforts at goal. Must start the next game.

Cassano 7 – Scandalously only offered 15 minutes at the end, but did more with virtually his first touch of the ball than Camoranesi did for 75 minutes before him. A magnificent chipped pass to put Toni through. Also must start along with Del Piero against Romania.

Oke sister thanks for the reminder! :), i just get carried away when people compare stuff with football :p,

SPAIN VS RUSSIA

Luis Aragonés and Guus Hiddink have both placed the emphasis of their pre-match build-up to this tantalising opener on not losing, so caution could be the order of the day in Innsbruck on Tuesday afternoon.

The two sides met in the opening game of Euro 2004 with Spanish edging a very tight encounter with a solitary goal from Juan Carlos Valerón and it could take just a single effort to separate the two sides here.

For Spain the pressure is as intense as ever with all kinds of baggage being taken into a major tournament with them once again along with the high expectations of public that believes success should be theirs, but inevitably will not be.

During his tenure Aragonés has been pilloried and derided and rarely praised with chapters like his outburst against Thierry Henry, his omission of Raúl and his arguments and rants at the media all having seen him earn more and more critics.

Then there is the performance of his team who have been accused of passing far too much while lacking the penetration to be able to play a major role in the tournament this summer.

Spain had relied on a steadfast defence, but even that is being picked at after Carlos Marchena weak clearance allowed Peru to score against Iker Casillas last week in a friendly.

While the media revel in highlighting and dissecting Spain's mistakes, all this may well be creating something of a siege mentality within the camp because all the players are certainly singing from the same songsheet in front of the media.

In the game against the United States and Peru recently, the team looked like a unit, but it is not look effective or incisive and that is an old problem that Aragonés is going to have to solve.

When a free-scoring striker at club level like Fernando Torres claims that the system is hampering him, then maybe it is time to consider a change.

Defensive Challenge

Against Russia, the Spanish will come up against a team that will defend in numbers and pose the kind of problem that has caused them so many problems throughout the qualifying period.

Guus Hiddink has unashamedly seen his side through to Austria and Switzerland utilising the counter-attacking system as well as being able to rely on England to fall at every hurdle to let them through.

After missing out on the World Cup Finals two years ago, the Russians have gone back to the drawing board under their Dutch coach and introducde a number of young, hungry players to lift them back to the top.

Players such as Igor Akinfeev is the number, with Vyacheslav Malafeev and Vladimir Gabulov more than capable back-ups, while Aleksandr Anyukovand Denis Kolodin are outstanding at the back.

The former Valencia, Real Madrid and Real Betis boss switches between 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 effecitvely and that has turned his current side into a very solid unit that conceded just seven goals in the entire qualification campaign.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Yuri Zhirkov, Vladimir Bystrov, Ivan Saenko and Dmitri Torbinskiy all offer something going forward while Igor Semshov and Konstantin Zyrianov add to a midfield group that will give the coach plenty of options.

Up front Oleg Ivanov has been called in to replace Pavel Pogrebnyak, who was forced out through injury, while Andrei Arshavinis suspended for the first two games.

Previous Meetings

There is not much history between the two countries with only two previous meetings since the fall of Berlin Wall, but before that the Spanish and the Soviet Union marked a memorable chapter in la Furia Roja's past.

In 1960 Spain were withdrawn from the first ever European Championships tournament because Generalisimo Francisco Franco had now wanted his team to face the Soviet Union.

Four years later though he knew that the groundswell of support for the Spanish team in Madrid was too big to let him prevent the team from playing in the final against the Soviets.

Chus Pereda gave the home nation the lead early, but just two minutes later Galimzian Khusainov equalised and the visitors were back in the game in front of a very nervous dictator.

It was not until the 84th minute that Marcelino finally netted to give the Spanish victory and hand them their first and, incredibly, only major tournament victory to date.

TEAM NEWS

Spain

Aragonés is keeping his cards very close to his chest, but reports in Spain suggest that the veteran trainer is considering pairing David Villa up front with Fernando Torres, rather than employ the conservative formation he played against the United States. In midfield, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Marcos Senna look set to play with David Silva just in front.

Russia

Arshavin is suspended while Pogrebnyak has been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury meaning the Hiddink will be trying a front pair that he was not expecting to.

PREDICTION

With both coaches stating their desire not to lose, goals may be at a premium. That having been said, Spain are far better equipped to make that breakthrough given the quality that they have up front. The Spanish will have to remember not to always look for the extra pass, while the Russians must be adventurous and not sit back for the entire match.

Spain 1- 0 Russia

Main player to watch : Fernando Torres?

So far so good for spain! Their attack looks very good, iniesta been amazing! So has villa and torres. Xavi's passing was superb!

I do think their defense is dead! They got the worst defense, one good attack and they are all over the place!

Good game, I really enjoyed it.

Man of the match for me was Villa, I'm sure most of you will agree. Russia was good, but could not cope with the high standards of Spanish talent and teamwork (Villa & Torres made really good teamwork throughout). Russia are a kind of 'stand still' team to me, they don't act ASAP while Spain react faster therfore making the best out of their chances. Favourites to win the whole competition for me are Holland & Spain. I didn't see the Germany match but apparently they were really good too, I'm sure Ballack was great.

SPAIN

Casillas 7: Did as much as he could in terms of saves. He was let down defensively for the Russian goal - fine otherwise. He could do more organising.

Sergio Ramos 7: Had surprisingly little to do defensively as Russia focused their attention elsewhere. Seemed to grow more foward-looking as the game wore on,.

Puyol 5: Ever-vocal and a decent organiser, but he was caught out for the Russian goal and somewhat unconvincing before that. He remains a question-mark in an otherwise solid-looking side.

Marchena 6.5: An improved showing from the Valencia stopper, who might have done enough to keep his place ahead of teammate Raúl Albiol.

Capdevila 7.5: Let himself down badly by sleeping at the far post during the Russian goal. Other than that he was impressive: he was only caught out once in defence. Masterful going forward as usual: his through ball to Torres for the first goal was a delight.

Iniesta 8.5: His rating might be even higher but for his puzzling early substitution. A tremendous through ball to set up Villa for the second. Covered every area of the pitch.

Xavi 8: Seems to have saved his best form for his country after another excellent showing. Seemed to tire towards the end; superb before that.

Senna 6.5: Great passing range as usual, but a little bit hesitant in defending. Granted he has a lot to do as the sole true defensive midfielder in the side, but he can do better than this.

Silva 6: Saw plenty of the ball, but tended towards selfishness and was quite often wasteful in the final delivery. Needs to show the maturity he cultivated last season at the Mestalla.

Torres 6.5: A generous pass to Villa for the first goal and some good moments of control, but he has yet to hit stride. Capable of improvement.

Villa 9.5: A hat-trick and an assist: not bad at all for El Guaje. Wonderful stuff from the man of the match, who may well have put in the best individual showing of the tournament so far.

Substitutes

Cesc 7.5: An assist and a goal, albeit a rather simple one, must give Luis Aragonés a headache ahead of his selection for the next game. Had he been on the pitch longer he could well have earned an 8.

Cazorla 6.5: Didn't have too much opportunity to stamp his unique brand of wing play on the game, but what he did he did well.

Xabi Alonso 6: Little time to impress, but not quite the steadying influence he might have been.

RUSSIA

Akinfeev 6: While none of the goals could be readily termed "preventable" from his point of view, there is the lingering idea that the youngster just wasn't commanding enough.

Anyukov 5.5: Afforded the likes of Silva too much space, although he was actually better than his teammates in that regard. A thankless task.

Shirokov 3.5: Very nearly sold the first goal to Torres 19 minutes in, and was responsible for selling the ball to Capdevila seconds later for the 1-0. Things didn't get better from there. He will watch the replays through his fingers.

Kolodin 4.5: Niggly in the tackle and nervy overall. Caught out repeatedly. One to forget for him.

Zhirkov 5: Run ragged defensively but held his own overall. Set-piece deliveries were disappointing. Nervousness dripped from his passes.

Zyryanov 6.5: An energetic presence, no matter where he was. It seemed as though any Russian spark would come through him for a while, although ultimately he didn't live up to this promise.

Semak 6.5: Broke up play effectively - sometimes a little too effectively for the referee's liking - and composed in the pass. Not at all calm in the shot, though: wasted a superb chance right at the end that any player should have scored.

Semshov 6: Saw little of the action and was predictably substituted.

Bilyaletdinov 5.5: He could have provided more for Pavlyuchenko but in fairness he was operating under tough circumstances.

Sychev 6: Energetic, but hooked at half-time nonetheless. Could maybe have tracked back more.

Pavlyuchenko 6.5: Earned his goal thanks to his work ethic in difficult circumstances. We probably haven't seen the last of his name on the scoresheet in the tournament.

Substitutes

Bystrov 6: Didn't do too much to vindicate coach Hiddink's decision to send him into the breach. Withdrawn, probably due to injury.

Torbinsky 6.5: A success story off the bench, although perhaps not a decisive one. Could have earned a start for the next game.

Adamov 6: A difficult task for him to impress in such odd circumstances - a substitute for a substitute - and one that he quite understandably did not seize.

Czech Republic vs Portugal

Winner Takes It All

Or qualification, at least.

Both sides won on the opening day - the Czechs fortuitously and the Portuguese most convincingly - and should there be a winner tomorrow in Geneva, they will have secured qualification to the quarterfinals.

As such, Portugal will most definitely be looking to go all out and secure qualification so that in their final game against co-hosts Switzerland they may focus simply on finishing top of the group and perhaps affording one or two key men a rest. The Czechs, though, would probably be satisfied with a draw, and that mentality may prove their undoing.

Missing both Pavel Nedved and Tomas Rosicky has robbed the Czechs of much of their creativity on which the domineering Jan Koller used to capitalise. With Tomas Galasek also getting on in years, the midfield in general is lacking in all areas it was once fairly formidable.

It will be up to coach Karel Brückner, then, to tactically discipline his players to work as a unit that will remain strong in defence as well as suitably quick and creative to enable attacking play.

Portugal's unit, meanwhile, looks like being almost complete. Nuno Gomes and Deco are hitting form at just the right time and are crucial cogs in the system. Gomes' presence in the box looked like that of his prime and Deco's passing was at times sublime, with the only question mark over him being his fitness.

Lesser known talents such as the sought-after Moutinho and particularly Petit put in top class performances.. The defence, too, is looking stronger than in recent years. Pepe seems to be the perfect partner for Carvalho, who sweeps in behind the roving centre-back. Meanwhile, Paulo Ferreira provides some defensive stability at left-back while Jose Bosingwa roars up and down the right.

The wings need no introduction, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Simao Sabrosa and Nani making up a magnificent quartet of wide men. Having gelled as well as they did, the Portugese will be hoping to exorcize the demons of 2004 and not only go all the way to the final but win as well. A win here will be crucial, as they should surely like to avoid Germany for as long as possible so they are able to gather strength and confident in the meantime.

TEAM NEWS

Czech Republic

No injuries reported from the Czech camp. Coach Brückner has suggested he was happy with the defence but will make a change in the forward line. Replacing the legendary Jan Koller in his final tournament would seem too drastic a move, despite the country's all-time leading goal scorer having a poor first game. Marek Matejovsky is thought to be coming in to replace Jarolim in midfield, with neither the wily Plasil or the in-form Sionko likely to be replaced. Milan Baros' inclusion as a second forward is a move probably too bold against opposition as dangerous as Portugal, but he is likely to be used from the bench.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Cech - Grygera, Ujfalusi, Rozehnal, Jankulovski - Sionko, Matejovsky, Galasek, Kovac, Plasil - Koller

Portugal

Again, no injuries reported from the Portugese camp and Luiz Felipe Scolari is likely to go with the same side that dominated against Turkey. However, wingers Simao and Nani picked up minor knocks and therefore could make way for Ricardo Quaresma, who did not make an appearance on Saturday.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Ricardo - Bosingwa, Pepe, Carvalho, Ferreira - Moutinho, Petit, Deco - Quaresma, Nuno Gomes, Ronaldo

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Czech Republic - Sionko

The lively Sionko's runs down the right hand side have proved a valuable outlet for the Czechs in the past couple of games, scoring twice against Scotland and a regular threat against Switzerland in the opener. He will be up against Paulo Ferreira - a makeshift left-back - and could well cause problems.

Portugal - Quaresma

Should he start, he will have a point to prove and will no doubt bring his box of tricks with him. An energetic and audacious player - much like Ronaldo in that respect - and in the shop window as well, with Porto having been suspended from the Champions League. He will have it all to prove, hoping to win a permanent spot in the team for the remainder of the tournament. Should he not play, the one to watch is Ronaldo for, well, quite obvious reasons - he hasn't scored yet!

PREDICTION

The Czechs certainly did not look like scoring in the opening game, but a change in personnel and ideas may see them grab one tomorrow evening. However, the midfield battle is only going one way, and what could well be incessant pressure from Portugal will surely see them overpower Brückner's men and make it two wins out of two.

Czech Republic 1-2 Portugal

Thats right! Quaresma's style of football is more creative, he comes up with strange ideas! ( he is also very lively).

Ronaldo is very direct! A few years back he wasnt like that, he used to do nice tricks and it used to work. Now he is very direct, cuts inside and shoots!

Czech Republic

Cech: 7 - Did his utmost to keep the goals out but was given very little chance. Made some good saves and was as reliable as ever.

Grygera: 6 - Somewhat positionally suspect for the first goal, but otherwise fairly solid down the right hand side.

Ujfalusi: 7 - A strong performance from the skipper, who stayed tight to Nuno Gomes and organised the defence well.

Rozehnal: 6.5 - His physical presence was an asset and he was a threat from set-pieces as well, but was positionally suspect now and again.

Jankulovsky: 7 - Stood firm on his flank and was thoroughly superior to Simao in the first half. However, he lost his legs slightly in the second, as Portugal were able to exploit the right as well as the left flank.

Sionko: 8 - A real threat down the right hand side. Took his goal very well and his running gave Paulo Ferreira a fair few problems. Got into several great positions and had some good efforts on goal; slightly unlucky not to score a second.

Matejovsky: 7 - Picked a few good passes and was better than Jarolim - the man he replaced in the side - but did n't get on the ball enough.

Galasek: 8.5 - Definitely the Czechs' best player, even though he was withdrawn towards the end when his side were chasing the game. Worked tirelessly, closed down spaces and doubled up with his defenders, making several saving challenges throughout. A performance reminiscent of him in his prime after a slightly laboured first game against Switzerland.

Polak: 7 - Not quite as impressive as in the first game, but a solid presence in midfield, though his influence waned in the first half.

Plasil: 7.5 - A solid creative force. Took good set-pieces and always looked capable of causing Portugal a problem when on the ball, but he didn't see enough of it.

Baros: 7.5 - Worked extremely hard for the team. Ran tirelessly and looked like the Baros of 2004, who finished to scorer of the previous edition of this competition.

Substitutes

Vlcek: 6

Koller: 6

Jarolim: n/a

Portugal

Ricardo: 6 - Not tested all that often, but had a couple of shaky moments, flapping at one corner in particular which, fortunately for him, did not cost his side a goal. Made one great save from Sionko which helped his rating.

Bosingwa: 7 - His pace was an asset in making a number of saving tackles. Wasn't prolific enough in possession going forward.

Pepe: 8 - A commanding presence as usual. Tremendously strong and fast which made him very hard to beat.

Carvalho: 7.5 - Swept up routinely at the back and rarely looked troubled. Did well to keep pace with Milan Baros on the most part.

Ferreira: 7 - Certainly gets an A for effort, particularly going forward and supplying crosses on his left foot despite being a right-back. Was not entirely comfortable with Sionko running at him, but hung in there to his credit.

Simao: 6 - Had a poor first half but became more involved in the second. Still seemed too hesitant in possession to make the difference; allowed himself to be closed down too easily.

Petit: 5 - Was poor, which will disappoint him after a good start in the previous game. Gave away careless fouls as he got tired towards the end of the game. Will be hoping he will keep his place in the side as he is playing his last tournament for his country.

Deco: 8.5 - Continued his good form from the first game and looked fitter as well. Played well in the build-up to the first and ensured the ball eventually got over the line. Also provided a smart assist for the match-winner and a great through-pass that eventually resulted in the third.

Moutinho: 6.5 - A little lost in today's game, but kept things moving and did the simple things well. Lacked the physical presence to impose himself against the Czechs' midfield.

Ronaldo: 8.5 - A consistent menace. Took his goal brilliantly, made a good run to eventually play a vital part in the opener as well and was selfless when playing in Quaresma for the third at the death when he could have scored himself.

Nuno Gomes: 7.5 - Understated but crucial. Played a smart reverse pass in the build-up to the opening goal for Ronaldo. Had a couple of decent efforts himself. Kept the defenders busy.

Substitutes

Meira: 6.5 - Defensively solid.

Almeida: 5 - Poor first touch, gave the ball away too often.

Quaresma: 6.5 - In the right place at the right time to tap in the third.

also in the french team include anelka, and thuram. :) soon they will add bacary sagna, another Muslim as well. it could happen that soon the majority of france's first team will be Muslim:

coupet, abidal, thuram, gallas, sagna, ribery, makalele, number 20 forgot his name, nasri, benzema, anelka

7 Muslims right there. also theres ben arfa, as well as abu diaby who can break into the first team.

Croatia 2-1...

What can I say. Germany are much better than what they showed today. I also felt so sorry for Ballack as he was like the only one out there doing something apart from the goalkeeper. And the guy at the end who got red-carded... out of frustration I understand why he did that, the Croats just wanted to drag the game on 'till the end, must've been so frustrating for the Germans.

Germany is over-rated, in my opinion. That guy so deserved it (the red card), I found they all actually played quite fair during the whole game but seeing the Germans were loosing the game against the Croats which seemed to be an slight "impossibility" against the "great" Germans, their players were also loosing it and making some bad moves.

Although, I gotta admit, the Germans have excellent condition.

THE BIG MATCH:D

HOLLAND VS FRANCE

Friday evening's encounter between the Netherlands and France is fascinatingly poised. A Dutch victory would seal their place in the knockout stages and put France under severe pressure.

The Future's Bright, The Future's Oranje

It was a case of 'brilliant Oranje' for the Dutch on Monday as a breathtaking display of counter-attacking football proved far too much for a beleaguered Italian side to handle.

Victory in their tournament opener gives the Netherlands a superb chance of progressing from the 'Group of Death'. Victory over the French on Friday evening would ensure progression and really lay down a message of intent to the other big nations.

Head coach Marco Van Basten, who departs to take over Ajax after the tournament, will be acutely aware that it is not how the Dutch start the tournament but how they finish.

Although Monday's 3-0 victory appears emphatic the margins were fine. After Ruud van Nistlerooy's highly controversial opening goal the Dutch scored their second and third goals from swift counters moments after the Italians had posed a serious threat at the opposite end of the field.

Van Basten remains coy regarding his side's chances telling the assembled press after Tuesday's victory that, “We have won just one game. It is only the first step.”

Still it takes a special side to beat the Italians by a three goal margin. This was the first time in quarter of a century that the Azzurri had been beaten by such a score.

Van Basten understatedly said, “It shows that we have a good team with quality and I'm proud of this.” Formerly a Dutch international of distinction himself Van Basten said that his side could do “great things” in the tournament.

Once again Vas Basten will look to a deadly attacking quartet to slice open the French defence. Van Nistlerooy is a prolific scorer both at club and international level. His poached goal against Italy was a typical predatory effort from the Real Madrid striker. Supporting him will be Rafael Van Der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt and club-mate Wesley Sneijder.

If this unit can perform as impressive against France as they did against Italy than the Dutch can be extremely confident of victory.

Raymond Domenech: Feeling Les Bleus

France's head coach, Raymond Domenech, finds it difficult to stay out of the papers for the wrong reasons. Even when the French side are going well few pundits have too many complimentary words to say about the former Lyon boss but after catastrophes such as Monday's scoreless draw with Romania there are no shortage of critics.

Les Bleus' tepid draw with the Romanians resonated loudly around Europe. German tabloid newspaper Bild declared Domenech an “idiot” while the French media were highly critical of his tactics without ever being quite so cutting.

A lack of attacking flair was sighted as France's problem. Missing Patrick Vieira in midfield there was no-one from the centre of park prepared to push forward and get past the strikers. This situation was not helped by a poor showing from Florent Malouda on the left while Ribéry on the right was often crowded out.

The balance of France's midfield was all wrong against Romania; it was much too defensive. The Netherlands will pose a very different threat to France than the Romanians and so Domenech can probably afford to start with the defensive pair of Makélélé and Toulalan at the heart of his side.

If no changes are made to the starting eleven of Domenech's side it will be a major surprise. Casualties are likely to include Nicolas Anelka, Malouda and Willy Sagnol.

Elsewhere other options must be examined. Thierry Henry, who has returned to training after a back problem, will likely start in attack alongside Karim Benzema while the widemen may also be subject to change.

Ribéry has already stated that he prefers to play on the left, his club position with Bayern Munich, yet he started on the right against Romania. It would be no surprise to see the ineffective Malouda dropped to the bench on Friday to be replaced by Marseille's Samir Nasri. The future Arsenal player would play on the right thus releasing Ribéry to play in his favoured role.

Patrice Evra and François Clerc both come into contention after uninspiring showings by incumbent full-backs Sagnol and Abidal.

Certainly something has to change if France are to hope to beat a slick looking Dutch outfit.

FORM GUIDE

Netherlands

06/02/08 - Croatia 0-3 Netherlands (Friendly)
26/03/08 - Austria 3-4 Netherlands (Friendly)
24/05/08 - Netherlands 3-0 Ukraine (Friendly)
29/05/08 - Netherland 1-1 Denmark (Friendly)
01/06/08 - Netherlands 2-0 Wales (Friendly)
09/06/08 - Netherlands 3-0 Italy (Euro2008, Group Stage)

France

06/02/08 - Spain 1-0 France (Friendly)
26/03/08 - France 1-0 England (Friendly)
27/05/08 - France 2-0 Ecuador (Friendly)
31/05/08 - France 0-0 Paraguay (Friendly)
03/06/08 - France 1-0 Colombia (Friendly)
09/06/08 - France 0-0 Romania (Euro2008, Group Stage)

TEAM NEWS

Netherlands

Marco Van Basten was without a plethora of attacking talent for the Dutch side's opening game of the tournament and will face France with a depleted squad.

Ryan Babble (ankle ligaments) and Clarence Seedorf (personal reasons) are, of course, unavailable but Van Basten's squad is otherwise returning towards fitness. Robin Van Persie was fit enough to play a cameo role against Italy while Melchiot is also expected to be strong enough to play a part if required.

There is only one Dutch doubt and that comes in the form of Arjen Robben. The Real Madrid winger is closing in on fitness and could be used to play a part from the bench.

Predicted Starting Eleven: Van der Sar; Van Bronckhorst, Boulahrouz, Ooijer, Mathijsen; de Jong, Engelaar, van der Vaart, Sneijder, Kuyt; Van Nistlerooy

France

Like the Dutch les Bleus were adversely affected by injury for their tournament opener however unlike Friday's opponents France could not cope. Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were conspicuous by their absence against Romania and both will likely play a part if deemed fit enough. Henry should certainly return to the starting eleven however there are greater doubts over the fitness of Vieira.

Raymond Domenech will likely make a handful of changes to the side that claimed a feeble point against Romania.

Predicted Starting Eleven: Coupet; Clerc, Abidal, Gallas, Thuram; Toulalan, Nasri, Makélélé, Ribéry; Henry, Benzema

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Netherlands

After a stellar opening performance the Netherlands will expect great things once again from Wesley Sneijder however it will be Ruud Van Nistlerooy who will provide the cutting edge to the Dutch attack.

The Real Madrid striker has scored in 4 consecutive group matches in the finals of the European Championship and will aim to extend that record with another goal against France.

A goal poacher extraordinaire Van Nistlerooy is the man most likely to end France's run of 5 international fixtures without losing a goal.

France

Devoid of real attacking flair against Romania the French will look to Barcelona forward Thierry Henry to reignite their Euro2008 challenge.

A back injury may be hampering the forward a little however he is the man who can provide the touch of magic to break the Netherlands' resistance.

Henry has scored 44 international goals in 100 matches, which is a remarkable return, however he has not yet registered against the Netherlands. Friday is an ideal opportunity to break his duck.

PREDICTION

If France adopt the defensive approach that they played against Romania they may well have a greater chance of taking something from the game than if they attack the Netherlands. Marco Van Basten's men have already showcased their devastating counter-attacking potential and have the pace in attack to pick-off a sluggish French defence. Unless Domenech backs his side to beat Italy in a final game shoot-out he will have to push players forward at some point, potentially spelling disaster.

Netherlands 2-0 France

My key players to watch!

- Benzema & Nasri (they got some points to prove)
- Henry (should i say more...?)
- Ribery (Did not play to well in the first game, should improve!)
- Van der sar (a big performance needed from him)
