Don't know anything about it being illegal, but all I know is that alot of Desis (Bengalis in particular) try to smuggle it (no, it's not a drug) when they come from back home, and apparently it is illegal to do so.
However, sometimes they manage to get past the airport security thing, and then they celebrate like mad. :p And btw, I'm defo not speaking from experience, I've only heard of these things. But yeah, it's not illegal in the UK or anything, you find it in shops and stuff no?

Ah JazakAllah khayr I get it now! So does that mean you cant get it anywhere in the UK? :skeleton: Aaaand does it really smell that bad? Aaaand, its the same for most food items [Illegal or not allowed to bring into country] so I think it makes sense now :thumbs_up

Nah you still find it here, but I guess it's one of those things where it's like you can get the quality stuff from abroad, that's probably why they try their best to bring some from back home - I dunno. And yes, it smells bad, really bad. We had some in the shed once lol, alhamdulillaah the smell's gone now though.

Certainly a delicacy for the older lots (I still don't know why though?!), but yeah you're right... it's not all that nice. It's sometimes nice as a dish though, as in not the fish itself, but the soup you can make from it... but I should stop talking before someone vomits! +o(
ima try cooking it one day
Don't say I didn't warn you. :X

shutki , what i usually call HUTKI, is dried old fish which is mainly bones and hardly any fish. Its like when you leave grapes to rot and they turn to alcohol, except its done to FISH :|
i use all my power to prevent the stuff being cooked in our house, yet all power seems to fail me
a picture of what shutki could possibly look like:

^ yes its bones and the tiny bits of flesh it may have preserved mixed with a whole lot of flavouring and other spices swimming in water and whatnot!
the worst thing is when they mix it with potatoes! it becomes DECEIPT!!!! the amount of times i ate the stuff thinking its Aloo Baji (Potatoe mixed curry) only to find my tongue and stomach tortured :(

Dried/Salted fish is very important for Malaysians, Thais and Indonesians. We dried almost every single type of fish...:D
We dried the shrimps, squids, sea cucumber, seahorses and cockles too
