Student awarded marks for exam abuse
A British student who scribbled an expletive on an English language exam paper was awarded 7.5 percent for accurate spelling and effective communication. The pupil, who wrote "f*** off" after being asked in an English exam to "describe the room you are sitting in", got 2 marks out of 27 and would have got more if he had added some punctuation, chief examiner Peter Buckroyd told
The Times.
"It does show some very basic skills we are looking for, like conveying some meaning and some spelling," said Buckroyd, who works for the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance examinations board.
"It shows some nominal skills but no relevance to the task.
"If it had had an exclamation mark it would have got a little bit more because it would have been showing a little bit of skill."
According to the report, to gain minimum marks in English GSCE papers — an exam taken by hundreds of thousands of 16-year-olds across England every year — pupils must demonstrate "some simple sequencing of ideas" and an ability to put "some words in appropriate order".

I've been known to do things like this. I dont and never wouldl write swear word but I write letters to the examiner, sarky answers and random comments when I dont know what the answer is.
You get marks for spelling and punction so I never leave a blank page. It is a bit of a stupid rule though...

Wow..
D'you think I'll be able to get away with stuff like that in my final year exams (?)
On a serious note though, the kid failed to answer the question, so surely they should've given him/her zero right?

From a teacher's perspective you have to look for the good in alot of things. :) If he would have spelled the swear word incorrectly it probably would have looked even worse for the teacher.

that's just lame....
so if thats the case then students preparing for english exams shouldnt really care and write a whole bunch of blasphemy and still get away with a few marks just cos they have spelt it properly and used appropriate punctuation.

OMG!!!!
OK, seeing as I am doing my GCSE's next year my answer to: "describe the room you are sitting in" will be:
I am sitting on a hard back brown chair, in a very wide and spacious room full of tired 16 years old, how boring is this? The room is painted a dull browny yellow colour with lots of ... cobwebs! Ewwwwww;scared of spiders.
That would get an A, wouldn't it? :giggling: In
red are the punctuation :D

I think this is great. Its about time we got beyond arbitrary taboo words.
Racial slurs are one thing, but words like the F word are taboo simply for the sake of being taboo. The reason why they are taboo is long long forgotten and keeping the taboo is nonsensical.

Its not bad enough for you to get no grade, but it is even worse than an F.
An A* ('ay star') is the best grade on the scale. Its right at the top and is really hard to get.

No, G simply comes after F in the alphabet.
You need a grade C or above to get a GCSE in a subject.

A* > C is what you need if you want to carry on studying, upto A Levels, or Degree Level at Uni. Some colleges, now only accept students with A* > B due to too many apllicants.
For Apprentiships, i think you can be accepted with A*'s > F's, but that usually depends on the employers/colleges.
:w: :peace:
P.S Lets get back on topic. :D

They are easy to avoid falling into though, you have to be pretty bad to get a U. Even this pupil who just swore on the paper managed to get a G.
