Police say tired driver crossed center line, killed oncoming motorist
Posted by Scott Bernard Nelson, The Oregonian July 18, 2008 08:09AM

Oregon State Police believe fatigue may have contributed to a crash on Highway 99W last night that killed a 49-year-old Corvallis man.

Shortly after midnight, a 2003 Chevrolet S10 pickup driven by 21-year-old Aaron James Veden of Corvallis was driving southbound on the highway near milepost 77 when it crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic.

Awad Mohamed Elgarguri, 49, driving with his 16-year-old son in their Geo Storm, reportedly attempted to elude Veden's truck. But the Chevy hit Elgarguri's vehicle on the driver's side, killing the Corvallis man. His son, Arubahr Elgarguri [correction: AbuBakr Elgarguri], was sent to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis with minor injuries.

Police said northbound traffic was closed for about four hours while investigators and medical personnel handled the accident scene.

A statement released by Oregon State Police this morning said officers from Albany have not yet concluded their criminal investigation into the case. It said that "fatigue is a possible contributing factor in Veden's driving."

Veden, police said, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with what they characterized as non-life threatening injuries.
Oregon Muslim leader dies in traffic accident

CORVALLIS -- A Muslim leader who worked to improve understanding of his religion in the Corvallis area has been killed in a traffic accident.

Awad Mohamed Elgarguri was heading home early Friday morning after a prayer session at a Corvallis mosque when a pickup truck crossed the center line and struck his car.

Oregon State Police say the 49-year-old Elgaguri died at the scene of the crash on Highway 99W. His 16-year-old son was recovering at a hospital and the pickup driver suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

A longtime friend said Elgaguri was the imam for the mosque for the past 15 years and had worked to build bridges between people of different faiths.
