A new £2m Islamic education and cultural centre is to be built in Preston.

City planning bosses gave the go-ahead for a former textile mill to be razed making way for the after-school centre and community hall.

The former Trutex building in Peel Hall Street, Deepdale, will be knocked down allowing for a three-storey religious education centre, one-storey community hall, a sports court and a 43-space car park to be built.

The green light for the development, which is being spearheaded by members from the nearby Quwwatul Islam Masjid, was given at a Preston Council planning committee meeting on Monday, August 4.

The new buildings will contain 28 classrooms allowing 350 children aged five to 18 to attend religious after-school classes.

Lancashire police backed the scheme, saying that the area needed to be regenerated in order to reduce crime and help community cohesion. Planning bosses approved the plans with a vote of 15 to one, with Councillor David Hammond objecting.

A report by a council planning chief says: “Educational, cultural and community uses is an appropriate use for the site and would enhance the facilities for the surrounding area.

“The design will create an attractive building that will significantly improve the appearance of the site.”

The approval was given subject to 20 conditions, which include, implementing traffic calming measures on the street and ensuring that there is a renewable energy scheme in place.

The building will also have to be shut by 9pm every day and the sports pitch on site cannot be illuminated with floodlights during the evening.
The development is expected to create around 20 jobs.

No-one from the Quwwatul Islam Masjid was available for comment.
