View Full Version : Commodification of Human Strengths

:sl: For sometime( not to long) I've been thinking about some of the weaknesses inherent in human nature. Seeking to correct these weaknesses ( or sins) is very difficult. Religions such as Islam have used harsh penalties in the afterlife to try and deter humans from committing these sins. Two of them are jealousy and pride. Now another solution is at hand (maybe). A lot of people don't realize that technology has come very very far and that it could soon radically change our lives forever the way the industrial age did. Scientists have now (right now) been able to genetically engineer humans. We can make people smarter, stronger, and in the near future more beautiful. This hasn't been actually tried on humans yet due to ethical concerns, but I'm sure most of you have read in the newspaper that scientists have been able to do this with mice. For this discussion let's not consider the effects of environment on human beings, although it has a very strong role in shaping us. Here are some of the questions that I have for the members of the forum. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Jazakallah.

1. Will the commodification of human strengths lead us to devalue the attributes that we once valued so highly.

2. Will sins such as pride and envy disappear due to genetic engineering, or will people have new things to be arrogant or envious about?

3. When scientists can make genetic engineering as safe as possible should we let our children's genes be altered?

4. Does Islam prohibit this? What about Christianity?

I'm not a very good writer and I'm sorry if I'm not clear enough.
For more information on this topic there are a lot of excellent books to read.
