Hey

Sheikh means an Islamic scholar. You need to have a degree in certain parts of islamic education.

it depends
sheikh can be royalty-like some royal families in the middle east
or is a religious scholar, who will have studied the religion
or a general term of respect to an older person

so yes just about anyone can callthemselves a sheikh, but for the real sheikhs, they will have some kind of 'ijaazah'

Some people from what I've heard are called Sheikh because they are old aged. Probably someone can clarify this.

EDIT: just realised the post above.

As Salaam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

It is commonly used to designate an elder of a tribe, a lord, a revered wise man, or an Islamic scholar. Although the title generally refers to a male person, there existed in history also a very small number of female sheikhs.

some Malaysians have Shaikh in their names because all of their ancestors have Shaikh in their names too... example..Malaysia's first cosmonaut - Shaikh Muszaphar...

It is correct indeed.. sort of like calling someone haj.. which literally means pilgrim.. yet some folks might not have been able to make pilgrimage and the title is bestowed upon them out of respect.

To be a Muslim scholar you need to go to school, people can have a doctorate in theology? Many Muslims scholars 'sheikhs' have their doctorate in one or more.. for instance sheikh salih ar'rachid.. I believe he has a doctorate in biochemistry? and Islamic studies..

The word Sheikh in essence in regards to the arabic Language is referred to an "Elder". The scholar is more rightly referred to as an "Alim".

And Allah SWT Knows Best. I hope I have helped.

The title sheikh isnt something thats official. Its just like people call you "sheikh" when they think you're worthy. Its not set in stone like the title "Hafiz" or "Doctor"

A alim (pl: Ulama) is a scholar of the religion and have a higher level of knowledge than someone how is just a shaykh, although a alim is also a shaykh themselves.

Shaykhs too can be on different levels in terms of knowledge.
