never angry, ever trusting hmmm kind of like the definition of, well...?>
also never seeking yourself? I don't know what seeking yourself exactly means, but I thought it was good:)

but seriously, what is love?
I don't really think there is such a thing as 'love' rather it's a misnomer for 'strong emotions', whatever these emotions are. thus we have some saying love and hatred are two sides of a coin...

What is love? The Faqeeh of Love, Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi wrote in his book Tawq al-Hamamah:
Of Love–may God exalt you! -the first part is jesting, and the last part is right earnestness. So majestic are its diverse aspects, they are too subtle to be described; their reality can only be apprehended by personal experience. Love is neither disapproved by Religion, nor prohibited by the Law; for every heart is in God’s hands.

Greetings and peace be with you chacha_jalebi;:

Here is the Bible verse as glo says, your quote is in bold and is often used at weddings.
1 Corinthians 13

Love
1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
In the spirit of praying to a loving and merciful God

Love is like a misty morning after a rainy night. Love is like the dew that forms on windows on a sunny cold morning. Love is like that wind that hits your face on a beach at sunset. Love is like the silent snowfall on a bright winter's night. Love is that silence that envelops you just before the dawn. Love is when that silence speaks to you a thousand words. Love is like the passing of seasons, like the coming of a warm spring after a blistering winter or like the coming of autumn after a humid summer. Love is when you are heard without ever uttering a word. Love is when time stands still, reminiscent of past memories...

This topic reminds me of a post I posted in the mixed female section a while ago

Perhaps it is appropriate to post it here too (I have removed a few quotes):

What does Love mean?
A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, 'What does love mean?'
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.

So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.'

Rebecca- age 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.'

Billy - age 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.'
Chrissy - age 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.'
Terri - age 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.'
Danny - age 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.'
Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,'

Nikka - age 6
(we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.'
Tommy - age 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.

He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore.'

Cindy - age 8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'My mommy loves me more than anybody

You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.'

Clare - age 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.'
Elaine-age 5
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.'
Lauren - age 4
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.'
Jessica - age 8
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge.

The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.

Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said,
'Nothing, I just helped him cry'

Love means different things to different people, and thus they will describe it in different ways. Sometimes, a person may tell you that they don't know how to describe the love that they feel. One thing is for sure though; love is most beautiful when it is expressed by halaal means.

So I'll charge you if I see it on a greeting!

love is divine, it measures on angel wings, it is born from hopes of immortality. Love seeks to tarry but hurry the time, where it can see mortal beings rent in twain and smile free..

Greetings and Eid Mubarak!

To me, love is a devotion to the beloved to the exclusion of all others even when the beloved one does not seem to return that love in kind.

This concept can be exemplified by the American movie, "The Notebook" with James Garner and Gena Rowlands. http://www.darkhorizons.com/2004/notebook.php "The Notebook" is an epic love story starring Academy Award nominees James Garner, Gena Rowlands and Joan Allen opposite young breakout actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. As a man (Garner) reads from a faded notebook to the woman (Rowlands) he regularly visits, his words bring to life the story of a couple (Gosling and McAdams) who are separated by World War II, then passionately reunited 7 years later, after they have taken different paths. Though her memory has faded, his words give her the chance to relive her turbulent youth and the unforgettable love they shared.

The beauty of this story is that the man returning every day to read the story is not a previously unknown co-resident of the nursing home, but rather the husband of the woman being read to who now has Alzheimer's and had forgotten who he is and his relation to her. The story that the man is reading was the journal that the woman wrote of their journey to find each other many years ago and their subsequent life together. As he read the story, there were occasional glimpses of recognition in the woman's eyes until she put it all together in a brief moment of clarity. They affectionately embraced only for the woman to almost instantly forget who this "stranger" was who had embraced her.

In Islam we have a simultaneous yet balanced love and fear of Allah. Our love for Allah is best exemplified by our devotion to Him to the exclusion of all other potential objects or entities of devotion. Our devotion to Allah is further exemplified by how earnestly we strive to obey His Will in our lives. His Will for our lives is exemplified by the Qur'an and by Prophet Muhammad's (saaws) life as preserved in the Sunnah. Therefore, our love for Allah is illustrated by how closely we apply the teachings of the Qur'an to our lives and by how closely we follow the example of Prophet Muhammad (saaws).

The thing is what do we get in return for this devotion? Well, we get the breath that we breathe, the water we drink, and the food that we eat. We also get the pleasures that our senses bring to us - the sight of a dozen hummingbirds feeding at a feeder, the scent of a freshly picked rose, the sound a mockingbird singing in the morning, and the taste of a freshly picked fig. We get the sun that rises every day to provide the energy that plants miraculously transform into food using the rain that falls from the sky, the carbon dioxide in the air, and a few nutrients from the soil. We get so many blessings that we can't even enumerate a fraction of them.

... but wait don't even the unbelievers get those very same things? What about the believers in the Oneness of Allah who don't even pray, or fast, or give charity? Yes, of course we all get these blessings and we get respite for a while, but one Day there will be an accounting to be made for our lives. The Qur'an tells us that those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) and do good deeds (pray, fast, give charity, etc) are promised Gardens of Paradise. While we have this promise from Allah, we do our deeds of worship not in order to get the reward for our obedience only, but also to avoid the punishment for the sin of disobedience for not doing them - and this is where the fear of Allah comes in to play.

there is an indian remake of the notebook, called 'you me 'aur hum' (and us), starring a real life married couple.

anyway, akhee you made me think, isnt our existacne a bit like the notebook, Allah created us and we made him a covenant (the beggining of our union with Allah as his creatures), and then we forgot due to being distracted by the world (alzheimers) and then he sent a notebook (the quran) to remind us? , but we keep forgetting.

Yes, you are exactly correct. When we read the Qur'an we Muslims catch glimpses of that forgotten covenant with Allah made before our birth and the Qur'an speaks to our heart. However, our worldly life and the temptations to sin distract us from the Divine. Then every once in a great while we may experience a moment of clarity and we pray to Allah as if we see Him and the words we recite strike us to our core. In those moments of ihsan (perfection), it is as if nothing whatsoever exists except yourself standing, bowing or prostrating before your Creator, Allah, often with tears streaming uncontrollably down your cheeks. ...and then we rise from this moment to go again about our worldly life with all of the distractions that it entails.

Unfortunately, like you said, "we keep forgetting".

(for reasons that are very apparent in this thread and elsewhere on this site) I have spoken against use of google/and or pasting from other sites.

if some text looks Islamic it does not mean that it is. when I make use of google or see any text on any site that looks appealing (and has something in common with Muslim texts) or worth sharing, I try to find out where it came from and give credit where it is due.

if, however, I fail to, then later upon being told by someone, I amend the post (or remove its content) to admit to my stupidity

:w:

edit. at risk of blowing my own trumpet, I would say that I am well versed with Paulism (as much as I need to be to realise that it aint for me, at the very least):w:
