I learned about islam online, and got most of my knowledge from websites for the first few years after I converted.

However, I looked at how knowledge had been transmitted from the Prophet (saws) to his companions and then throughout history, and it wasn't someone picking up a book or a piece of paper and learning on their own. Nope, they all had teachers, who taught them the knowledge. If there was a book, the teacher would read his students the book and explain it as he went along.

As such, I've sought out teachers. I've started to study shafi'i fiqh with shafi'i scholars, as well as aqeedah and tazqiya (purification of the heart). Alhamdulilah with the internet, we can study with excellent teachers who are half way across the world from us :D

As a young child, i lived with my grandparents, uncle, aunites, brothers, sisters, all under one roof.No one was practising, no one still is.My grandfather and father pray regularly but thats about it, just going through the motions of prayer doesnt make you a good muslim.

One day, out of the blue, my dad sat me and my brother down and started telling us a story, about Adam and Eve and how Adam was Allahs prophet and about all the prophets after him.I must have been 6/7 :) I remember enquiring why Allah didnt sent female prophets and my father, unable to give an adequate anwser, became impatient. I didnt ask any questions after that. But i would bug him over and over to repeat the story.I was fascinated to finally know, to finally have a purpose of existance,...and a childs belief in anything, is the strongest, most powerful belief.

I began to think of Allah alot of the time, fuelled by the awareness of how silent the rest of my family, and extended family were about this important knwledge.

I grew up and proudly propogated my hijaab (i was 1 of 2 girls in the whole class at primary school wearing hijaab).A girl whose mother looked like a super model, finally took notice one day and began enquiring. She said you look 'Holy', my mom wanted to know whats going to happen to us after we die (she was muslim) , and i remember walking to lunch explaining, delighted that she was interested.Years later i ran into her and her mother at a conference. They were both wearing hijaab.I guess thats the first time i gave Daa'wah lol.

Thats the only good thing i recieved from my father in terms of explaining Islam. He gave us, and still does, a very mixed message, something along the
lines of...' Islam is important, dont ever break the rules, but i can bend the rules when i want when the most important thing in our life, namely culture, demands so. Islam is good but culture is great, Ill use Islam as long as it doesnt override culture'.

So as i grew up and read, because i love to read, i realised how beautiful Islam was, and how i had been cheated from knwoing. My family is as it was all those years ago, but i will pray for them InshaAllah.

end of dissertation. :-[

LOL ^^

My Islamic 'Ilm started at age of 5 I guess when I was enrolled into Arabic and Islamic Studies classes.

The first thing I remember being taught was that Allah (swt) is the All-Hearer and the All-Knower. How was I taught that? Well the whole class was given a sweet, and we were told to go and eat it somewhere where nobody else at all would be able to see us...

The result...we all came back very upset that our hiding places hadnt been very good :-[ lol that was a nice little lesson though masha'Allah.

After that I got enrolled into the local masjid where my mum was the teacher, until I was 10 I read under her...and then I guess it just continued until I was 11 and went to an Islamic School and then the 6th form....Its been a journey I guess and will continue to be a life-long one bi'ithnillah.

My Grandfather had an extensive library at his house, whenever I went I say my aunty's with their heads stuck in books...That struck me and I became like that too...Thats where I got the habit from I guess, of wanting to read 24/7...I always wanted my own little library and I guess thats kinda what I have in my rather messy and book-cluttered room :-[

So yeah....thats it :-[

Ah and also from the Internet and friends.

I also have lengthy discussions with Poppa about Islam Alhamdulillah.

WassalamuAlaykum

My Islamic studies teacher was an Imam. :coolious:
I learned so much from him and when he left to study more in the Middle East. I started researching on my own, from some the books and sites he used and recommended. I learned "*gasp* Some of the stuff he said he directly quoted Ibn Kathir and many other scholars. Not to mention the Hadith and Quran. With that, I took off learning from there, I found more and more articles here and there, on the internet and in stores.
=).

I guess I learned a few basics in Sunday school and how to pray kinda lol, I mean I figured it out by accumulating what I learned in 3 sunday school schools.

My parents, erm not so much. I mean they encouraged me to learn and put in me classes, but they were learning too.

My grandma taught me all the small Surahs and the concept of God, and the Shahadah.

i absolutely love Mufti Menk's kutbahs! each year, after reciting Taraweh, he gives a 30-40 minute talk on the Juz that were just read. i first got a packagew deal from Simply Islam containing 3 years worth of these talks, Tafseer from 2003[10 cds], Points To Ponder from 2004[14 cds] and Reason of Revelations from 2005 [14cds]

this set here:

http://www.simplyislam.com/iteminfo.asp?item=57802

i first listened to Tafseer while finishing Yusuf Ali's translation of the Qur'an. it being my 1st time completing the Qur'an [in English :-[] i was a little overwhelmed by all of the material. THEN i started reading Muhammad Asad's The Message of the Quran : New 2004 Authorized Edition (Muhammad Asad) English and Arabic from here:

http://islamicbookstore-com.stores.yahoo.net/b8257.html
i also switched to Reasons of Revelation
[available for free here: http://www.muftimenk.co.za/Downloads.html]

it's base upon Asbab Un Nazool, and is all about WHY certain Ayats were revealed! I WAS THUNDERSTRUCK! i had heard/read "Makkan Surah/Madinan Surah" and assumed that the Surah's came down mostly whole, i was wrong! this series of lectures changed my life and really brought the Qur'an alive in a way i wouldn't have thought possible!

btw, the "video" download that is available on this page:

http://www.muftimenk.co.za/Downloads.html

is the 1st lecture from Jewels and the 2. Tafseer - Ramadaan 1428 (2007) Cape Town is the audio from Jewels!

i have just about EVERYTHING available by Mufti Menk, having just go "Jewels", the Taraweh set and the Straight Path. this morning i ordered more "Jewels" and a the single cds that aren't on the Cape Tour 2005 or the Straight Path, alot of which are available here:

http://www.muftimenk.co.za/Downloads.html
on 2. Mufti Ismail Menk Lecture Series - Volume 1 and 3. Mufti Ismail Menk Lecture Series - Volume 2; also great is 1. Social Conduct - Ramadaan 1425 (2004);

the Jewls vid is 27 lectures about 15 hours on 5 discs and Mufti Menk is the most amazing lecturer on Islam that i've ever heard!

compare the Simply Islam prices to soukIslam plus extra 10% off with this code [SPEC7861; valid until the end of the month!] and it's a bad decision NOT to buy! In Sha'a Allah i may also purchase some of their Zakir Naik and/or Deedat vids. and today i also ordered: Qasas Ul Anbiya - Stories of The Prophets by Sheikh Dr Tareq; hey, 20 cds for $20!

shown here:http://www.soukislam.com/shopexd.asp?id=701

hope this helps!

The last Maulana who taught me told me that Shi'a spit in food which they give us during Ramadhan. Ever since, I've lost trust in bearded old men who claim to know everything about Islam because they're dressed like Imams.

i agree that most parents teach very wrong things about islam and that whether of their ignorance or their wrong understanding of the knowldge that's why it's always good to make sure that our understanding is the right way by reading many sources about the same subjects from the books of ahl sunnah wa ljamaa
may allah teach us what he loves and help to understand it well and work with what we know ameen

I've learned from teachers at the mosques. (Quran)
Lectures on my phone..(my subjects)
Whenever any of my family members (their younger than me) learn something I encourage them to come home and teach us. That way they get excited because they are the experts on the subject. And they always have to have daleels (where they got the information from etc)
It seemed to help because it creates a learning enviorment within the household.
I learn some things online, but its kind of hard to find reliable sources. So Jazakallah to anyone who put up a website we can go on.

I'm still gathering my knowledge. I try to learn something new every day. I read books, I listen to lectures, and I visit the masjid whenever I am able.

Once I tried to learn too much, and too quickly. I jumped into Islam with both feet because I was so excited about it. I quickly got overwhelmed, and frustrated, and then became angry. I quit everything for a few months.

Now I am trying to find my way back, but I am doing it at my own pace.

assalam o alaikum

my parents are my first source of Islamic knowledge..
Being born in a religious home having practicing Muslim parents is a great blessing of Allah (SWT) Alhamdullilah

we had a religious environment at our home where we learnt the basics and other necessary knowledge of Islam and with that my parents provided us (me and my siblings) with many Islamic books from childhood and that is from where my interest in reading books began..

my Islamic school and my teachers. i have learned so much about my religion there.

by reading quran with translation , tafseer, hadith books by my self

also i have learned Islamic knowledge from some young muslimas and still learning..

From books, attending dars lectures etc, some from internet where much from IB

I got it from my mother who studied Quran and Islam very much. she read many books like Tafheemul-Quran Commentary by Sayyad Abu Al-Ala Maududi and other commentaries like Ibn Kathir and Marif-ul-Quran. She also studied many books on Islam and attended many lectures.

as a child i used to listen to Abdul-Basit Quran recitation which i loved and it was amazing that i started to understand the arabic word's meaning even though i didn't know arabic. One reason for this was that when some surah would be recited, my mother would tell us the story about it. For example, when we listened to Surah Yusuf, my mother told us the story about Prophet Yusuf Alaihi Salaam. sometimes she would tell us the commentary. in general, she learned Islam so well from all the books that she had studied, and then she relayed that information to us while we were growing up.

i also was given some books about the Sahaba, including a book i was given by an American Muslim revert. So i learned about parts of Islamic history from them and a lot of Islamic history i learned from my mother, who learned it from tafsir and other books. reading a good tafsir will give you a lot of information about Islamic history and the Sahabas.

after ward, i attended some lectures and read some books. if i liked a scholar's speech, i'd look for more of his speeches. if a speaker was such that didn't know how to speak or didn't have much information, i'd get bored fast and wouldn't want to go to his speech again.

in my college course, i studied many islamic subjects, including fiqh and tafseer, etc.
