:sl: to our Muslims members, Peace to our non-Muslim members,

I notice that we have some members that spend a considerable length of time here daily.

I wonder if it is healthy for a person to spend that much time on the PC? How much internet per day is too much? Is there any harm in being addicted to a forum? Do some people hide from life by building up an artificial cyber-life on the PC?

Just to give us all a chance to look at ourselves. It is possible to damage ones personal relationships by substituting the internet for real life. Hopefully, that is not happening here. But, if it is happening to any members i hope they can recognise it as a problem and regain control of their lives.

Forums can be a sort of home to some people. In many ways LI is my Islamic home as I have very little contact with Muslims in real life, where I now live. To a large extent this is my connection with the Ummah. However, the realities of life does limit when I can be online.

Perhaps, if it where possible for me to be on the PC whenever I wanted to be, I would develop an addiction. If that would be a healthy thing? I do not know.

indeed, some members spend too much time here, it's certainly not healthy, but I think they might not have an alternative?

btw I usually come here when I'm bored:)

I have holidays...got nothing better to do. >_>

I rarely socialise due to my Asperger syndrome. The only exercise I get is going to the gym. The only way I pass my time is by surfing the net, playing games, and learning a bit of French. Maybe I'll start on Farsi also... that language is so difficult to pronounce!

:sl: Honestly, life is just too hectic for me to spend more than 2 hours straight online. I hop in and hop out really. I'm working, going to school, and in the midst just trying to balance a family life. Juggling all of that is a very hard task!

Being addicted to the internet is never good, go to the park, read a book, read the Quran, just get offline otherwise you'll just be extremely lazy. And laziness is never good, especially laziness in regards to obedience to Allaah. Be active, and try to spend only a necessary amount of time online as possible inshaaAllaah.

Not addicted as I used to be. I wouldn't miss the internet if I weren't to come on for a few days. I'd only miss the Haram salaah. Oh, and I'll miss deadlines on my online class. :p Seriously, life without the internet is awesome, it's reallly nice to take the forced break every now and then...

I wonder if it is healthy for a person to spend that much time on the PC?
The computer is the alternative to the TV. TV is so yesterday, and computer replaced it. Go figure if it's good for us.

How much internet per day is too much?
Depends on the person and what their job / education is. If they're computer science peeps, it makes sense of for them to be on all day. Otherwise...that's bad.

Do some people hide from life by building up an artificial cyber-life on the PC?
I think that most people do, and that's natural. For starters, most of the members here are outgoing, and it's only easy to be that outgoing with strangers behind a screen. But going too far and creating a whole new identity that is completely different from reality is harmful more to yourself, cuz you're escaping the problems in your real life and not finding a solution. If people are on LI to escape, fine, I understand that. We all need to escapes life's harshness at times. But we cannot live in an escape, because then it ain't an escape anymore. At some point the escape will also become harsh, and then you escape again to...?

But I also think quite a few members are multi tasking, and are working on their homework and projects while they're on LI, so it seems like they're on forever, but that's only cause their work is taking forever. I know, that doesn't sound like a brilliant idea, but the distraction is helpful to avoid a headache or getting overwhelmed by the work.

LI is gunna kill my eyes some day. I really need a break

Some days my assignments etc and stuff take soo long that I literally feel as though I'm having to scrape my contacts off of my eyeballs at the end of the day...eww I know that sounds nasty but they get really dry and painful :-[

Real life is busy and hectic, and with uni and siblings that are constantly demanding attention, I guess I neednt be on as much. But the internet hasnt really been an escape as such, the only other reason I'm on it so much is that I can eat, work, browse LI and manage to have a decent conversation with my mum at the same time :-[

So yah..

I was a pure addict on msn chat when it was open. I mean like wasting time talking and chatting until i join the forum. Im kinda addict. But i can surf on mobile not only PC which saves the harm plus with the work i can come on anytime.
But like truemuslim said i still say this is better than music and chatting on msn.

Yeah I dont use them, I've heard of them but keep forgetting to ask since mine are monthly disposables and the next set come through the post so there's no need for me to go instore anymore. JazakAllah khayr for reminding me about it though.

You know, sometimes I find that if I spend less time on the PC....I have more time for other things (Duhh obviously :-[ :rollseyes) but by that I mean that say Ima go home in a while insha'Allah, if I get off of here sooner, then I have time to walk slowly and look at whats going on around, appreciate the beauty of this place ... etc etc....

I don't have a problem getting addicted. I'm not knowledgeable to ever add on anything (I don't think that's a good thing -_-), but I come here to find an article or two that I can apply to my life for the next few weeks, optional fasts, an extra du'a, more inspiration I can spread around.
I keep up with current events through the World Affairs.

My job for this forum is to post wisely, not just arguing (for stupid topics) that is wasting my time (ie- comparative religion and clarification about Islam).

Basically, I continue to decline 2 or 3 times per day posting from high percent and I have to focus on other things too.

Keep balances !

Good question Woodrow...well in my opinion besides the fact that using the PC for along time temporarily(probably permanently in come cases) limits the sharpness of your vision, narrows your focus(even after you leave the Pc), weakens your ability to concentrate not to mention creates unwanted stress n worries over what you should be doing but aren't doing yet n of course the weird illusion that you somehow gained 10pounds while unblinkingly starring at LI..:exhaustedwew..besides that being on the pc 24/7 is absututly PERFECTO
