why is it/what does it mean when a hadith has many narrations.

for example these two:
"Contemplate Allah's creation and do not contemplate Allah."

and

"contemplate Allahs blessings and do not contemplate Allah."
(Saheeh al-Jami as-Sagheer)

i mean perhaps they differ in meaning, but im assuming the above two mean the same thing, since the author of the book i took them from, puts them both in the same context.

So: why does one hadith have different narrations. does it mean that the prophet (sallalahu aleyhi wa sallam) mentioned it more then once or....:?
