Chinese media quoted the captain of the attacked Chinese vessel, Peng Weiyuan, as saying that his crew had challenged the gang of pirates with used beer bottles, fire hoses and homemade incendiary bombs.

Seven pirates managed to board his vessel, the Zhenhua 4, Peng was quoted by CCTV, the official television as saying. His crew fought the pirates until they "gestured to us for a cease-fire."

The crew also sent out a distress signal, which was picked up by a duty officer at the Piracy Reporting Center in Kuala Lumpur. A nearby Malaysian warship reacted by sending a helicopter to the scene. The pirates, which came under helicopter firing, fled the scene in a speedboat. But the Malaysian warship did not apprehend the pirates because there is still some confusion on how to deal with pirates on the high seas, a spokesman of the International Maritime Bureau in London, said.
