If you have the money, go for alienware, dell or other high name brands (these babies will usually be packed with the highest gfx/sound cards on the market plus higher quality ram etc)

Otherwise, stick with pc world/comets high price range. (gfx card will be mid range mainly - maybe lucky to get a high range but it will cost a lot). In general, pc world/comet will have more affordable prices but won't come with the latest gfx cards, whereas alienware et all will have those and also a bigger price.

So if money isn't a problem and you want high quality gfx card, go for alienware, dell etc because pc world won't have it.

Good memory would be at least 2 if not 3GB and Hard drive space of maybe 140GB or so...

Here is a list with a few of what id sort of get....

In my experince ive always had a desktop PC and it has served me well for well over 3 years. Ive got a Dell PC and they are good laptops aswell as Desktop PC's.

Many of my friends have Acer laptops or toshiba laptops as they are reliable with good specs.

£500 is adequette for a really decent laptop.

I've had a Dell for 3+ years now.. it worked great.
But last year it slowly started dying.
I reinstalled windows like 284 times, cleared the harddrive, all sorts of stuff.
It works well enough now, still occasionally goes mad and I get a bright blue screen, followed by a shutdown. But it's been good to me.

So yeah, even with all that, DELL still rocks.

get a mac, dell is cheap and all, but it's got very low specs-unless you're willing to spend- compared to the macs. but then, it's pricey too, but it's top notch performance & hardware wise, and if you love windows to death and all, just install it:).

it's not cheep tho..

Stay away from Toshiba and Dell. The aftersales support sucks!!!

I worked for Laptop manufacturers until recently.

If you want a decent reliable laptop buy a Sony Vaio. No headache and great service.

Hmm. I bought an Advent laptop. Never heard of the brand before personally, but 3 years later and it's still working a treat. Never had any problems etc.
Bear in mind I only use it for the basics like surfing, watching vids, working and MSN and stuff and not really into the gaming side of things.

First what are the spacification you need in your machine

Speed?
Hard Drive?
Weight?.....*this is very important to me*
Screen?
the location of the fan.....*make sure its not only one and not only placed in the bottom of the laptop*
the location of the finger print...if you need any.....*some laptops have it in annoying place where it gives you a message every time you move your hand over it, especially if it was near the keyboard*

well for me.....Dell is good
Hp is good as well
but currently I am crazy about the design of Apple macair.....very light and stylish...check this:

No Dells. I worked for Dell and they were the worst company ever. Their tech support is horrible, and I couldn't even begin to tell you how many horror stories about them.

Go to www.ihatedell.com, and read the forums. Everything I had to deal with is there from so many customers.

If you want something good and reliable; go for an IBM or an Apple. Apple's are pricing, but the service and reliability are top notch.

am not quite sure what u mean by ''to expensive'' as in what figure :p

Had it been me needing to buy a laptop then i would go for this one here

Samsung Q310.

with 4gb of ram

250gb of harddrive

geForce go 9200M GS 256MB as a graphic card now this isn't designed for hardcore gamers, but then agian what games are you looking to play?

This laptop will cost you roughly 600-700 euro's.

Check this thread for a comparison between some of the popular brands today, in particular post #6:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=345140

I personally did some research into laptops because I'm looking to get one for the same IT purposes as well. I looked into Dell, and the best one I liked was the Dell Studio XPS 16. Very nice (the customizable one) but a little expensive. You can get similar features for lower prices. Went to HP and didn't really like them. Then I went to Sony Vaio and from the wide selection they offer, I liked the Vaio FW390.

https://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...tegoryId=16154

Base price is cheap and customizing it to what I wanted only added about $300 more bringing total to $1200. With the extended warranty it'll probably be another $100, but all in all it has everything I need. Except MS Office Professional which is going to run me a good $400 imsad

On the forum I linked above, they had this helpful thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=278446

Anyway take a look at that forum and go to the "What notebook should I buy section" and make a thread there.

Quick question to those who know about processors:

Is there any significant difference between the following three processors for a laptop that's going to run Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.00GHz)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)

It's a $100 upgrade from the T6400 to the P8600. And between the T6400 and the P8700 there's a $150 upgrade. Is it worth it?

I can always recommend apple macbook for graphic works. But for IT it wouldn't be the best as you will have to work with some apps that are not running on mac. They are pretty expensive too, buying windows laptop in your case you will get more for the money.

I would avoid glossy display. If you really work with the computer and not only play around glossy display can lead you into madness...(almost)...
Intel core 2 duo processor are all quite good, never mind about that, you are not going to cut movies or anything, so just dont buy the slow intel core duo.
Some laptops have a special modus for saving energy which cant always switched off. If the laptop is not connected with the power cable, the display will not work in full bright. Sometimes it is pretty dark. So if you want to use the laptop outside and dont have electricity around you should ask for this.
Some are also very noisy and are getting very hot.
In general buying a dell computer the value for money is quite good. But of course they have slow and overpriced computers too. Sometimes supermarket offer special laptop. It seems to be a good offer but you will pay for features you dont need (most of them are good for gaming) and some of them are very slow.
