I have been given an interviewto study zoology at manchester university, now zoology has been the thing i liked since lets say i was 5 years old. Since then i fascinated by it, so what i thought of doing is study it and then go to a jungle or an open ocean somewher in the tropics and work.

Well problem is no one is supporting me with this idea, none of the family members in fact they are very much agianst it.

Now are there any scientist here who could advice me with zoology nd tell me how it is? Or what the chance of me working when i gain the degree?

He wants to become a zoologist, Yanal, not a zoo-keeper.

Zoologist: a specialist in the branch of biology dealing with animals.

Steve Irwin wasn't really a 'zoologist' :rollseyes. He just kinda wrestled with crocodiles.

My Bio teacher's a zoologist. Has a PhD in worms. :skeleton:

Which degree? You will be very, very lucky to get anything in that line without a PhD, so you need to be prepared for the long haul.

Study what you actually want to study, though. If you are really motivated you will get a First and with that it becomes an awful lot easier to pick and choose postgraduate courses that give you the best chance of achieving the opportunities you want; even those with very little to do with zoology.

Do what you love (as long as it's not haram) and you'll never go wrong. Especially if you don't care about the money.

Decide what you want and why you want it and what the implications of doing that are, and then come to a decision.
I don't know much about zoology, but mashallah it sounds very interesting, I hope you enjou whatever you choose.:thumbs_up

Knowing that they are not happy with me, esp my mum is having high blood pressure and can't get to angry. So this is a very difficult period for my self.

Is it hard to get a job generally with just the degree, or is it much harder with zoology?

In practical terms, I'm not sure if there's much of a demand for zoologists. I had a friend who studied zoology, but couldn't find any jobs in that field. She then got a job in a lab as an MLA and is now qualifying to be a biomedical scientist, she just has to do a few top-up modules.
Have you ever considered marine biology?
Sorry am not of much help.

Yep i had considered marine biology and it sounds really appealing, but i guess my thing is more on land rather than on the sea :). She couldnt find a job in the country she lived on, or did she look abroad? See my only concern would be findin a job later on, and am afraid i might not find anyimsad.

Thanks for the help.

Talking about in the Uk in general. She didn't want to leave the country I think.
You may have potential insha'allah if you broaden your horizons.
I think though, that it'd be best to study something that you really really enjoy. I made the mistake of studying something I find liked and found challenging as opposed to a subject I loved and found easy purely because of thinking ahead and thinking about the areas I'd like to work in. I'm in my final year now and no longer feel too much interest in the subject, which is a shame I guess.
Serious though, try Istikharah. May help in this life changing situation of yours.

Zoology is a fantastic field. but it must be seen as an intermediate degree program. For a BS or BA the only work options will be in the teaching fields. Usually as a biology teacher.

At the Master's level employment is almost unheard of. However, by that point you have the background to begin specializing and planning your Ph.D or Medical studies. many MD do begin with a study of zoology. Zoology makes up a big part in Medical school or even some fields of psychology.

Other doors that can open will be the options to study animal husbandry, fishery management, wild life management, veterinary Medicine and many options in research.

no thats fine.. :)

Uhm a starting salary for zoology in the UK isnt 35K lol! Much lower than that in fact, it might never even reach that much.

And i have my offer and place in university for zoology next year and my parents have agreed to it.

However i might have to do a change of plan. THe employment rate for zoologists in britian isnt very high, soo i considered to do veterinary science instead, which has all the fun of zoology plus that little bit more. I must wait another year to do that though to reapply, nd down here its extremely competitive.. Soo letss hopee.

MashaAllah, good compromise brother. Although, would you really have to miss a year? Couldn't you start off doing zoology and then transfer to veterinary science?

I wish i could :(

Thats something nearly impossible to do. Veterinary science is a high demand thing, and extremely competitive, in here its harder to become a vet than it is to become a medic lol.
