Heyya Josh,
Welcome to the forum.
I don't live in England...but where I am from, I work for an interfaith organisation. Our organisation utilises the largest mosque in Australia to hold mosque tours. They take about an hour long with Q/A session afterwards.
You mentioned you hadn't been to a mosque. I suggest you do. I don't know if they hold mosque tours where you are from, but they are a nifty little thing and you should look into whether or not something like this is available around you.
You might find some stuff that interests you on our website: All our courses etc are organised for people of non-muslim background so it's all pretty straight forward and easy to comprehend.

Also, our old president, now deputy, wrote a book called '101 Questions you asked about Islam'. He took note of the common questions being asked during mosque tours etc and wrote a book. Don't worry, he isn't some drongo off the street. He lectures at my university and is completing his phd in religions.
