Mash'allah, Islam has given us a clear definition of unity and brotherhood and how it can be realized and implemented. Unlike other bonds; which are superficial, animalistic, reactive, emotional, and completely devoid of a real solution for life’s affairs, the intellectuality of the ideological bond of Islam unites man irrespective of their race, nationality, and other factors which are irrelevant when it comes to bonding on an ideological creed. Allah in the Qur’an describes what is unity in Islam as the Mu’minoon being united in a Brotherhood based on solely Islam:
“The Mu’minoon are but a single Brotherhood.” (The Holy Qur’an, 49:10)
Allah further defines this Brotherhood by explaining that Muslims are awliyyaa’ (allies, friends, supporters) of one another, and this again is based solely on Islam:
“The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin the ma`roof (all of Islam), and forbid the munkar (all that is evil; kufr): they observe regular prayers, pay Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.” (The Holy Qur’an, 9:71)
Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu `alaihi wa sallam) indicated in several Ahadith on unity and brotherhood as we can see in his (saaws) Farewell Sermon (khuTbat ul-wadaa`):
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood.”

Nowadays, whenever one looks at the Muslim Ummah, they find it broken, distracted and disconnected in its aims and entity, and so they recall the early age of Islam searching for a way to reform. There was a time, not long ago where stood as one. Prayed side by side as one. How the times have changed. Today we see that what divides us is social status and ones pride. Dr. Hammudah Abdul-Atti recorded in his novel “Islam in Focus”: A man's struggle to fulfill his unnecessary wishes and desires are turning his life into hell. That is, man has become a slave of his personal desires. Material benefits have become his identity, wealth has become his race, social status has become his color and love of money has become his creed. In short, we can say that materialism has become the faith of a man.

It is said that Islam demolishes all material limitations and equalizes the different social status to maintain a peaceful social order in the society. Different concepts shape the unity in different societies. Concepts such as: race, linguistic, geographic, intellectual, and economic. As Muslims today we fail to realize that Islam rejects all constricted concepts of unity.
The definition to unity is evident. The reasons as to why our brothers and sisters in Islam have not utilized it are still a mystery. Disunity among Muslims is our greatest problem today. It has been an issue for several years now. We have the power, physical, and brain capacity to change it, but we still haven’t. We watched the disunity turn into a terrible disease. We witnessed the pandemic spread to different levels. We have disunity at every level: within our communities, at the local level, national level, and international level. So let us put an end to this plague now. Breakdown the walls that keep us apart. Extend out our hands and wait for others to unclench their fist. Hand in hand together we will achieve entity.

“And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere”
(Al-Anfal 8: 46).
