Tafsir Ibn Katheer is regarded by most to be comprehensive regarding explaining the verses and the background stories of each of the verses. If you wish more about Islamic rulings, Al-Qortobi's book is more tuned towards that.

I don't remember the online source but there is a digital copy available for free download without any royalties or copyright issues. I have them and can send them but on forums usually it is preferable that resources are published publicly as some people wouldn't like to divulge their emails and also all readers can benefit. As soon as I find the link I'll post it here.

There is no Qortobi copy in English available yet. Sorry.

Hope that helped though.

That is true, and that is why I published the link to the Explanation book. Ayan333 said he wanted a tafsir that goes in deep detail and stories, and Ibn Kathir is the best for that, followed by Al-Qurtubi which focuses more on the Islamic rulings though. :) Insha Allah with a bit of work and God's tawfiq the difficult becomes easy.

Wa alaykumus-Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, ukht!

Here's a great little book talking about how to seek knowledge, with practical advices and how to be a successful student of knowledge. Some common mistakes done by the students are also pointed out. Although I don't study Islamic sciences I benefitted very, very much from this book. After these guidelines, the author mentions what books to study at the begining, then what and then what etc. In sha Allah the book will be useful to you.

May Allah make you a good, sincere student of knowledge and may you be beneficial for the Muslims, ameen!

chm files are files that work under Windows XP and Vista normally without conversion. They are the windows format for Help files. Just double click the file and a help window will open showing contents and index facility as well as search, and you can move around better than a word or pdf document.

Hmm. I'm working under Vista.
It's saving as a binary file is that the same as a chm file?
Am I clicking the right button? The floppy disc with the arrow?

Hmmmm. I just double-checked the downloads and they are fine. Two of them are direct chm, and two are executable files that unzip into chm files. Qurtubi is also fine. I am working with Vista too but have no problem.

You are right though, on the executable files Vista mentions that you are downloading a Binary file. You click (with left button and save file, or right click and "Save destination") and it will say it is a binary file, but actually saves it with exe ending. The file will install and unzip the chm file in the folder of your choice when you execute it.

By the way, at Islamhouse.com you will find other books of Tafsir and also other explanations and briefer versions of Ibn Kathir.

Just double click a topic to open the subjects, and when you double click a specific subject it will display in the window. otherwise you might have a problem with your help file displaying ability in Vista and you might want to check with a technician.
